Title: The First Victim

Publisher: Carina Press

Pub Date: 13 June 2011

ISBN: 9781426891748

Author: Lynn, JB

‘The First Victim’ is a horrifying but satisfying read. It starts off with a horrendous, unbelievable event change changes people’s lives forever. Rather dramatic, but frankly speaking, it is believable, cuz things… unwanted, horrible things happens when you least expected it. This book makes me think that horrible things really can happen, just that you don’t know when. And when those horrible, terrifying thing actually did happen and affect your life tremendously, you’d find yourself wondering how the hell it can actually happen to you or the people around you.

This book may be a fiction, but it serves as an eye opener to me. Thumbs up for the author for her splendid writing skill that could easily provoke so many emotions all at once as I read it.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review for this book, and I was not compensated in any ways for this.

Yours To Keep

Title: Yours To Keep

Publisher: Carina Press

Pub Date: 06/06/2011

ISBN: 9781426891724

Author: Stacey, Shannon

‘Yours To Keep’ is a beautifully written story and one could easily relate it to real life.Well, at least, I could. It reminds me that sometimes, when you want something and yet the thing does not exactly belong to you, no matter what you do to pursue it, it will not be yours. Quite pointless to pursue something that you know that it will not be yours, is it not meant to be, isn’t it? if it’s yours, then it is yours, no matter what. If it is not, then it is not. But then again, that doesn’t mean you can keep what actually belongs to other people. You cannot keep what is not yours, for retribution will come without failed.

I learn alot from this contemporary novel. It shows you the meaning of belonging among many other themes in the story. It teaches you to do the best, and let Fate do the rest.

It’s a very sweet story despite of the slow, leisurely pace. I like this story very much, and I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and I’m definitely not compensated in any ways for writing this review.

Book description:

Sean Kowalski no sooner leaves the army than he’s recruited by Emma Shaw to be her fake fiancé. Emma needs to produce a husband-to-be for her grandmother’s upcoming visit, and, though Sean doesn’t like the deception, he could use the landscaping job Emma’s offering while he decides what to do with his civilian life. And, despite his attraction to Emma, there’s no chance he’ll fall for a woman with deep roots in a town he’s not planning to call home.

Emma’s not interested in a real relationship either; not with a man whose idea of home is wherever he drops his duffel bag. No matter how amazing his “pretend” kisses are.

No One To Trust

Title: No One To Trust

Pub Date:13 June 2011

ISBN:9781426891731

Author: Julie Moffett

‘No One To Trust’ by Julie Moffett is a real gem. It’s a pleasure to read. It’s fast paced and adrenaline inducing. It also does not spare your funny bones. It’s action, wit and a little bit of wacky misadventures blended in.

This book teaches me one thing: Sometimes, friends can be your enemy, and your enemies can actually be your friends. Confusing? Well, I suppose it is. Things can get really confusing, but don’t worry, things usually gets better as truth is slowly revealed.

As I read this book though, I wondered if one could be evil enough to make their enemy’s enemy their friend? Or should one keep your enemy at arm’s length instead of avoiding them? Hmm, curious thought, and it gets curiouser and curiouser to me as I read along.

Don’t get me wrong. This is a wonderfully written story. There’s structure, there’s dynamics, and one got to love a heroin that can hold her own despite of her flaws.

Love this book to bits, and it’s definitely a keeper. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I thought the cover could be improvised a little bit to make the book looks more attractive to readers.

Cat’s Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold

Title: Cat’s Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold

Publisher: Carina Press

Pub Date:27 June 2011

ISBN: 9781426891809

Author: Sharpe, Bettie

‘Cat’s Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold’ by Bettie Sharpe is a really good story. This is the kind of fairy tale where the main character is not exactly a perfect, kind, faultless being but a human who is learning to be a better person along the way.

This book teaches me alot about retribution and second chances. Seriously speaking, I could relate this book to real life. But the only thing that’s different in real life is that  ‘lying tarts’ who cares for nothing but about their own pleasures does not exactly deserves a second chance, especially when they made the lives of others difficult or miserable while they go off to Carribean or something to shake their booties or sip some exotic drinks while sunbathing in the beach. I cannot understand how could such creature exists? I mean, how could someone so black-hearted and evil as to take pleasure as other suffer as a consequence of their action? That is beyond my comprehension.

Anyway, the plot of the story is highly original and I feel as if I couldn’t get enough of the story. It is too short for me, and I wish that the story is a tad longer.

Kudos to the writer for this wonderfully written story. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley and I was not under any obligation to write a postive review for this boo. I was not compensated in any ways for this.

King Solomon: The Temptations of Money, Sex, and Power

Title: King Solomon

SubTitle: The Temptations of Money, Sex, and Power

Publisher: Crossway

Pub Date: 31 July 2011

ISBN: 9781433521546

Author: Philip Graham Ryken

How well do we know the Biblical King, Solomon who was featured in and the Book of Chronicles and the Book of Kings?

When I was a little girl, I see King Solomon as a wise man who knew everything in life because God bestowed him such wisdom. When I grew up a little bit and was a dreamy, hopelessly romantic teenager, I see him as a seductive man who easily seduced the Queen of Sheba with his endless wits. And when I’m an adult, I see him as a man whose downfall was caused by lust and disobedience toward God’s will.

How do you see King Solomon from the Old Testament, I wonder? This book, King Solomon: The Temptations of Money, Sex, and Power written by Philip Graham Ryken is an in depth study of the Biblical’s king’s life, from cradle to his grave.

It was very well written and researched, and I definitely enjoyed being enlightened by this book. Inspiring read.

A forewarning to those who wants to read this book: You’ll spend a lot of time thinking, so be prepared to think alot if you’re to pick up this book.

I rate this book 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Crossway publisher via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review for this book and I was not compensated in any ways for this.

Book description:

Though the world’s wisest king, Solomon’s heart was led astray by temptations of wealth, sex, and power. And we face the same dangers today, though the temptations may be different in degree and detail.

Author Philip Ryken writes, “In witnessing Solomon’s moral triumphs and sinful failures we learn how to live more wisely. By the grace of God, we may avoid a tragic downfall of our own and learn how to use money, sex, and power for the glory of God.”

Tracing Solomon’s life from coronation to burial—and from godly devotion to self-serving excess—Ryken shows readers how to avoid similar downfalls and seek God’s glory amid earthly temptations. These thirteen chapters are pastoral, rich in application, and biblically faithful. This overview of Solomon’s life also includes a study guide, making it a great resource for both personal and group use.

Chantilly’s Cowboy

Title: Chantilly’s Cowboy

Publisher: Carina Press

Pub Date: 06/06/2011

ISBN: 9781426891700

Author: Kayn, Debra

I was expecting an ordinary, typical Texan style romance in ‘Chantilly’s Cowboy’ by Debra Kayn, but I was highly amused when the story surpassed my expectations. I was not only entertained by the languorous, budding romance between the main characters, but I learned quite a little bit about sewing in this story.

Chantilly (the main character) is named after a type of lace. Gosh, and I thought that’s just a fancy name.

Anyway, this book is a wonderful, comfortable read. It’s something that i would want to get my hands off whenever I need some comforting romance. It gives me warm and fuzzy feelings. My only complain is that the book is too short. I practically devoured this book within an hour. It was not enough for me.

I enjoyed the book very much, and I rate this book 4 out of 5. I received an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley. I was not compensated in any ways for writing this review.

‘Goddess With A Blade’ is a book with a soul. It’s very alive, and seems to have a mind of it’s own that I could not predict where it’s actually heading to. It was beautifully written and I was locked down with suspense and anticipation of what’s going to happen next.

‘Goddess With A Blade’ is highly exhilarating with strong, memorable characters and eventful plot. Creatively original.

I enjoyed reading it very much, and I highly recommend this book to those bookworms with a penchant for adrenaline rush. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Quarter Square

Title: Quarter Square

Publisher: Carina Press

Pub Date: 27 June 2011

ISBN: 9781426891823

Author: Bridger, David

‘Quarter Square’ by David Bridger is a very intense and thrilling read. It starts off very emotional, making me sympathize with the main character for the injustice that he’s suffering, but as the story moves along, it gets much more interesting and instead of pity, I enjoyed how the characters and the environment developed.

If you’re not into paranormal stories, then you might find this story a tad strange and hard to imagine.

I enjoyed it despite of the queer environment in the story. It has it’s own allure, and I’ve always fancies heroes who starts off weak and emerge strong and highly dominant in the end.

Overall, this is not a bad read. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.  I received an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley.
