Frugal oyster sauce and crabstick pasta

This is going to look a little weird. To some, it might be weird, because not many would cook spaghetti this way. The mad fairy is on her evil witch mode again and was desperate to cook something to poison herself and her poor family with.

The fairy was out of groceries yesterday, and discovered that there’s nothing left in her fridge besides some crab-sticks, chopped garlic and some cabbage. And this is what she decides to cook with those stuff she managed to dig out from her fridge and from her kitchen cabinet.

The weird looking pasta is a combination of chopped garlic that has been sautéed with soya sauce, oyster sauce, black peppers, salt as well as some crab-sticks and cabbage. Looks weird eh?

I think it looks really weird and strange, but taste-wise it’s quite nice and edible, and make a wonderful quickie meals for those who have no time to cook elaborate meals.

It is nothing gourmet, just a frugal meal to keep your tummy warm while you’re working or studying. I would recommend this to busy mums a s well as students. Cheap and it also won’t take much of your time to prepare.

Here’s the recipe:

1/2 packet of spaghetti or yellow noodles (I used spaghetti)

Some crab sticks

6 tablespoon of soya sauce

3-4 tablespoon of oyster sauce

1 table spoon of chopped garlic

1/2 cup of water

Some cooking oil

Salt and coarse black pepper to taste

First of all, cook the pasta/noodle til al dante and drain. Put it aside. Pour in some cooking oil in the pan and sautee the chopped garlic, soya sauce, oyster sauce and black pepper til fragrant.

Add the cabbage leaves that has been torn to bite sized pieces as well as the crab-sticks into the sauce and add some water and wait til it simmer and thickens before adding the pasta/noodles into it. Stir and make sure the sauce coat the pasta/noodles properly. Add some salt to taste if you prefer.

Take out and serve while it’s piping hot.

Yield: 2 servings

Preparation time: 10-15 minutes.

Cleffairy: My mum used to cook something like this when I burn the midnight oil for my exam, but she used chicken instead of crab-sticks. You could substitute the crab-sticks with any meat of your choice. πŸ˜€

For the first time…

Scheduled entry. (I’m away at the moment)

Last week, I went out with my big brother and big sister. It was really fun, and I really enjoyed it. Bought so many things that I like and I was spoiled rotten by big sister to the point I feel as if I could actually bursts with joy.

It’s been quite some time since I allow myself such simple pleasure of being in the company of the people I adore and enjoy being me without having to fear being judged or scorned upon for being somewhat weird and awkward.

With them, I never have to care about how I dressed up and I don’t have to worry that they will laugh at me for liking books more than clothes, because they understand what I like and dislike.

While I’m rather outspoken and rash most of the time, I’m afraid, such trait does not apply to me while looking for something to eat.

Knowing that I’m not so adventurous in this department, big sister brought me to Kanna Curry House somewhere in Petaling Jaya area for me to try these:

Banana leaf rice with condiments

With assorted curries.

Now, this is my first time experiencing an authentic banana leaf rice. It was really a gastronomically pleasant experience. I’ve been living in Malaysia almost all of my life, and yet I never tried such a thing, cuz I somehow thought it’s very scary and spicy.

But to my surprise… having a banana leaf rice meal with big brother and big sister is a fun and exciting experience, and I have to say it’s educational as well. Learned many cultural stuff from it as well.

Being a first timer in eating banana leaf rice…I was really surprised that the rice as well as the vegetables that’s placed on the banana leaf is actually free flow. Yes… you heard me right, it’s free flow. I was told by big brother and big sister that they will add the veggies, condiments as well as the rice for you for free, as much as you like. (Actually you’ve already paid for it.).

I was skeptical at first, as I looked around, I realized that they were telling me the truth as I saw people keep asking for pappadums (some sort of Indian crackers), veggies, dried chillies as well as acars from the mamaks and they just top up for the customers without any qualms at all. I saw papadums flying around too. LMAO.

Anyway, you can also order side dishes such as fried chicken as well as fried seafood, but that, you have to pay extra. I don’t know how much it costs, cuz big brother cleared the bills, much to my embarrassment.

Initially I wanted my husband to clear the bills…but big brother had already had the bills in his hands, and insisted that he pay it.  Damn… I should have secretly pay when I went to wash my hands then.*blush* So… yeah… I cannot tell you guys how much the meal costs, cuz I dunno the price. πŸ˜› Big sister won’t tell me how much the meal cost, even when I asked her how much it was. πŸ™

Anyway…I walloped my share of the banana leaf rice along with a nice piece of fish and fried chicken that big brother ordered for everyone to share.

I tte everything except for the bean sprouts that’s been placed on my banana leaf, cuz I can’t take bean sprouts. LOL… I dumped the bean sprouts for my husband to eat instead, cuz if I were to eat bean sprouts, that would mean I’ve been asking for troubles. My body cannot tolerate bean sprouts though I like the taste of it. They make my stomach cramp and convulses, even when I take just a little bit of it. I ended up in hospital once when I was a kid, for taking bean sprouts, so yeah… bean sprouts is a deadly no-no stuff for me.

Before I dig into my food, big sister actually asked me if I want to use fork and spoon, but I was rather intrigued by big brother who used his fingers to eat, and so I washed my hands followed suit.

LOL…I find it really fun and exciting to eat rice with my fingers. There’s a certain degree of pleasure in it, and I could have sworn that the rice tasted much nicer when I used my fingers to eat. I recalled my biology class then. My biology teacher mentioned to me before that our hand produces some sort of enzymes, and therefore when we use our fingers to eat our food, the food will taste much better than when we used the cultleries.

Big sister also told me that there’s a way to fold the banana leaf rice after we finish the rice; to tell the mamaks whether we enjoyed the meal or not. But I didn’t know how to do it correctly… lol…I wanted to fold the banana leaf rice to tell the mamak that I enjoyed the meal, but I ended up doing it the wrong way. πŸ™ Those poor mamak must have thought that I didn’t enjoy the meal cuz I’ve folded the leaf wrongly. πŸ™

Anyway, it was such a pleasure dining with big brother and big sister. Thank you so much for the meal and the experience that I’ll probably remember for the rest of my life. And… it is safe to say that I’ll probably hunt down some curry house on my own for more banana leaf rice meals. LOL…

Cleffairy: Simple pleasure such as this, sometimes is the biggest joy.

Bloggers meet up& fried rice…

I attended a…secret blogger meet-up cum ice breaking session yesterday, and I have to say, it’s really refreshing to be able to hear bloggers talk about something that really matters and could probably saves the world from mass destruction and how to make the world a better place for the next generation instead of the usual annoying camwhoring session, stupid nuffnang stuff or even how to attract traffic to one’s bloody blog.

I enjoyed it very much, and I would like to thank the organizer for inviting me for the blogger meeting. The meeting was rather intellectual and one of the kind, and this is going to sound very weird coming from me, but I enjoyed everyone’s intellectual view and the intense debate. It was so much fun. I have forgotten when was the last time a blogger’s meeting was as interesting as this, and I’m actually looking forward for more.

There was many familiar faces, and everyone has so many things to say and time passed by so fast.

The organizer provides dinner, of course, but no one were actually so keen on touching it, cuz perhaps the topic of our conversation was too interesting that we neglect to feed our tummy.

Anyway, below is what the organizer prepared for us talkative chaps.

Apple pies and pineapple pies. I didn’t have a go at these, so I don’t know whether it’s good or not.

Curry puffs and cinnamon rolls. The curry puffs are very spicy, and I had two of these. Not bad at all.

Chocolate danish and some sort of custard puff. The chocolate danish is something to die for. I like it a lot though I thought that it wouldn’t suit my taste buds when I first saw it.

The organizer also prepared some fried rice for us, and most of the bloggers who attended the meet up didn’t even bother to touch it or even eat it.

Most of them claimed that they were on a diet while some others says it doesn’t look appetizing enough, but do you know what I did though I agree with them that it doesn’t look really appetizing?

I brought the container containing the simple fried rice back. To be honest, it doesn’t look appetizing, but hey…why waste food when I could actually improvise it?

I decided to improvise the fried rice by cutting the chicken to bite sized pieces, add some chopped garlic, soya sauce and salt as well as fried eggs. Now, doesn’t it look much better?

The moral of the story here is, never ever let good material goes to waste. If you actually make some effort to improvise, the outcome would have been fantastic, and in this case, yummy and edible. All it takes is just some creativity, passion and patience. Don’t you agree with me, dear readers? It’s such a shame if you let good material goes to waste when it can actually be a yummylicious gourmet.

Cleffairy: Patience, creativity and thinking out of the box is what it takes to make things turn out better than before.

Malaysian Men=Virile?

If you’ve been reading enough Harlequin Presents as well as Mills& Boon romance craps lately, you would realize that people in the West actually thought that our men… Malaysian men are virile and romantic, oozing with sex appeal, and Malaysia is an ideal place for an exotic, sexy getaway where passion and romance is absolutely guaranteed.

You know, kisses under the sun. Seduction on a secluded private beach and bittersweet reunion in KLIA and whatnot.

Most of you may not know this, but apart from Italy, Middle East,Greek and Sicily, Malaysia have been quite a favourite setting for many romance books and e-books alike.

I am not quite sure why people in the West thought that Malaysia is an ideal place for a romantic seduction and a place for those who covet happily ever after and passion in and outside of their bedroom, because in truth…Malaysia is quite a conservative country to even begin with.

You kiss on the street, and you’ll either find yourself for  charged for committing a close proximity or you’d be fined for it.

I also don’t understand why they filled their heads with the illusion that Malaysian men are romantic to the max as well. As far as I’m concern… men, Malaysian men in general are not romantic. They have… ahemm… difficulties expressing themselves, and most… are very chauvinistic. Don’t you agree with me, ladies? Malaysian men are like that, are they not?

They’re very reserved in comparison of their Western counterparts, and they tend to take things for granted too. Seduction only came during the courting stage, and not after marriage. They forget birthdays, anniversaries, and cares for nothing but themselves…especially those who came from a very typical Asian family.

More often than not, they claim that action speaks louder than words. I wonder if these men knows that sometimes, the ladies wants to be assured verbally and physically as well?

It is very rare to find men who are passionate and romantic in Malaysia. Gifts and token of appreciation are hard to come by. Unless they want something from the ladies… romance is as good as dead.

I am not quite sure why foreign authors painted Malaysian men as virile as well. In Harlequin Presents, especially, Malaysian men are painted as dark, brooding, handsome and a bomb in bed. Their erections are often described as long, and hard as well as thick, and they put their ladies’ pleasure before theirs when they performed in bed. And I find it rather hilarious that these authors thought that it is all right for PDA in Malaysia.

Some are authors are worst off…they thought Malaysian men, are somewhat orgasm machine. Sometimes, I really do have to laugh at these foreign author’s writing. Pretty exaggerating and far-fetch if you ask me. I wonder if they ever came to Malaysia in the first place, as for what it’s worth, in their mind, Malaysian national food is some exotic satay and kebabs. Don’t they do their homework? Geez! πŸ™

Most foreign authors thought that Malaysia itself is an exotic place, full of exotic and erotic people. Full or romantic men, and beautiful, passionate women who are submissive and willing to surrender their heart, body and soul between the sheets.

Harlequin books got me speechless, sometimes. They painted Malaysia so beautiful and liberated. Too beautiful that I feel ashamed that as Malaysian, I did nothing to promote my own country.

Perhaps I should do something about it and start writing some romance crap with Malaysian setting as well? I think at least I would be able to describe things better. Way better…. if I lie to myself and pretend that I am a foreigner, that is.

Cleffairy: Malaysia is beautiful. But the people who makes it goes is not.

It was 100Β° celcius hot…

Pete thought I went MIA because I was busy doing stuff on the bed, looking for G-spot. LOL… unfortunately, that was not the case for me. I was busy, yes, but not on the bed, but outdoors, meeting people whom I am fond of and people who loves me,people who are important to me,people whom knew me not as Cleffairy, but the girl who had dreams, and a hell of a daredevil.

I was busy. Busy being me. It’s been a very long time since I am ‘Me’. This is the next best thing a lady could have besides spending her time in bed, discovering how to bring her pleasure to the next level and screaming her head like some possessed madwoman.

Yes, people… Cleffairy does go out and meet people, though not as often as those classy hussy of socialite. *roll eyes* I do have a life though some of you thought otherwise. And yes, I do step out into the sun when I feel like it. Yes, it is safe to conclude, that Cleffairy is just elusive, and not a bloodsucking vampire, though she looks like one, according to smallkucing. LOL.

It’s been a busy week for me, and I haven’t had the chance to go around blog- hopping and leaving my thoughts in everyone’s blog, and for that, I extend my sincerest apologies, and I pray that everyone is doing well and surrounded by harmony and happiness.

Mother Nature seems to be showing her fierce streak these days, reprimanding her human brats not to mess with her or she’ll burn us all the way to hell with global Warming, and no matter where I go, I will feel like being under the weather. the heat is almost too much for me to handle, but apparently, it doesn’t stop me from going outdoors, or even put the heat on my table.

It was 28th February 2010 when my other dad; my FIL decided to put the ‘heat’ onto the table for the closing Chinese New Year Dinner. Honestly, I’ve been really looking forward to the closing dinner on Chinese Valentine’s or better known as Chap Goh Mei, because truthfully, I am rather fond of my FIL.

Having meals with him had always been a pleasure, because he made it a happy occasion by letting us children eat whatever we like, and apart for that he make great conversation instead of finding faults in everyone who is seated at the table during meatime, and I usually enjoy his companionship.

Anyway, it’s never the food. It’s great company that counts. πŸ˜› I could sit in a mamak stall with my FIL and have just iced tea and roti canai, and I’ll still enjoy the meal immensely.

I like the fact that my FIL always emphasize quality over quantity. I may not get to spend much time with him, but the time that we usually spent together are usually quality time, and he always gives me the feel good feeling each time we meet for lunch, dinner and whatnot.

In many ways, he is another father to me, and I didn’t like the fact that many misunderstood him and judged him for the things that he did. He may not be the perfect human being to everyone else, but he is someone whom I respect, because he earned my respect without demanding for it, unlike many others in my life.

I never did respect him just because he’s an elder. Never because of that. I respect him because I chose to, and I want to. Not because I was asked or forced to respect him. I admire his courage and wisdom to not only take chances in life, but also for his bravery to admit that he is not always right as well, and tries his hardest to make amendments for his mistakes, even though it was beyond repair.

People may have shunned him and judge him, but I think, he did the right thing at some point in his life. FIL made me see, that everyone is just human. They are entitled to make mistakes, and nobody should judge others for what they did, and for what it’s worth, what differs us human and animals is that we can use our brain to think to live in harmony with each other. Those who cannot do that…who constantly tries to make others uncomfortable by trying to create tension and uneasiness on purpose just because they dislike others, is no better than animals.

Anyway, enough rantings and ramblings. As I said earlier…though the weather is scorching and sizzling hot, it does not stop me from going out and facing heat on the table.

The heat that I meant was the heat that came from steamboat pots. LOL… My FIL brought us, the brats to a steamboat restaurant known as 100Β°C Steamboat restaurant, located in Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur.

The ambiance was good. Japanese style, and fully air-conditioned, and one could have their steamboats with personal pots. Good for those who are tired of fighting over what soup they should order when eating steamboat in restaurants. One need not fight over what kind of soup they should be having in this steamboat restaurant, cuz they have personal pots for each customers.

They also have wide selections of sauce to go with your steamboat, so you won’t have to just eat your fishballs, veggies and whatnot with just the usual chilli sauce. Yes, people, the picture above is those sauce I mentioned. All you can eat. LOL…

For starters, FIL ordered the auspicious Yee Sang. Everything was fresh and crunchy, and the salmon fish buried inside was something to die for. It was sweet and fresh. And the pomelo pulps inside of it made me crave for more.

I ate my portion, and somehow wished that there’s more. I not only had fun tossing the yee sang together with my FIL, my BIL, SIL and Auntie, but I also had fun making auspicious wishes together with them. This ‘closing reunion dinner’ was fun and gives me the feel good feeling, and it is so damn different from the so-called reunion dinner that I had during the Chinese New Year’s Eve itself. Well, different company, different kind of feelings, I guess. I certainly like this one better than the one during Chinese New Year’s Eve, that’s for sure.

I ordered my favourite soft drink to go with the food…Hahaha…. yes, we’re always allowed to order our own drinks when we go out with FIL. Isn’t that great? We’re allowed to make our own choices because FIL treated us like adults who are perfectly capable of making our own decisions. LOL…okay, that’s a bit exaggerating, though… but I like the fact that FIL allowed us to choose our own food and drinks instead of making decisions for us. He spoiled us rotten…and we’re allowed to take those unhealthy stuff to our heart’s content.

I made excellent choice with the coke, as I chose tomyam as my soup, and boy, it was so damn spicy, just the way I like my tomyam soup to be.

My portion of steamboat ‘liews’. I just ordered the small set, consisting of various fishballs and chicken slices, cuz I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to finish off those bigger ones.

I forgot to snap most of the food pictures as I was too busy enjoying the food and having a good chat with my FIL and SIL…but I can assure you that the food was as great as the company. πŸ˜€ I’m particularly fond of the chicken slice… I’m not quite sure what they used to marinade the chicken, as it was so sweet and succulent. There’s hints of pepper and sugar, and I’m not quite sure what else. All I know is that it was yummy, and therefore, they deserved a place in my tummy.

Apart from the little mishap caused by the waiter earlier on while delivering our drinks, everything else was perfect and pleasant. My younger SIL was unhappy with this little incident, and rightly so, as the spill drinks dirtied her handbag. I would have been upset if I’m in her shoes, but everyone was in a happy mood, so I guess theΒ  apologies and the discount given as compensation chilled my SIL’s temper, and our lunch was not ruined after all.

Under normal circumstances, I would have gone berserk and inform them that I will be writing about the incident, and they should be more careful in the future, but then again, as I said… I was really in a good mood, and I couldn’t feel angry and therefore, did not lash out at the poor waiter who probably will be reprimanded by his superior. LOL… very rare or me not to flare my temper, right? Well… good company does that to me, I suppose. I am only cranky and bitchy when I am not happy and had nasty people for company. The rest of the time…I’m as serene as the calm sea. (Yes, do not provoke me, that’s the keyword! I have a hurricane in me, calm as I looked like.)

Before we left…I snapped a few more pictures in the restaurant, seeing how at ease everyone was. My BIL took out his phone to snap some pictures too, and my sporting FIL gave a few good pose when I was in action too. πŸ˜›

I don’t know what this signboard says…as I couldn’t read Chinese characters…but I’m guessing it’s a wishing well? I don’t know. Please read it for me and let me know what it says….

There was a nine dragon fountain underneath the signboard…I guess it’s a wishing fountain… as people threw coins inside to make wishes.

There’s another one underneath the signboard too… a single golden dragon guarding the man made pond. I am impressed… dragons guarding water. I suppose in feng shui, this decoration means the dragons is guarding the incoming money. πŸ˜›

This small gathering with FIL is one of the reason why I went MIA… I’ve been outdoors throughout the week. I need constant challenge to keep me motivated, and I bet March is full of challenges. πŸ˜€

As much as I enjoyed good companionship and good food, I’m hoping to get back to my routine as soon as possible. πŸ˜› Sometimes, being too blissfully happy makes me tired too. I need constant challenge to keep me motivated, and I bet March is full of challenges. πŸ˜€

Cynderella’s Cookies Seduction

Please note that this is not a paid advertisement, and never would be. In fact, at the time I wrote this, the subject in question is not even aware of my entry.

Originally I wanted to write something about naked men, but… I feel that naked men is a topic that I can talk about any other day. Sizzling hot naked men can wait. But my Cynderella cannot wait any longer.

You see… as of late, I have come to know of a blogger friend by the name Cynthia, but I dubbed her Cynderella… because I feel that she is one, though her life is not a fairy tale. She’s one Cynderella who needs to make her own happily ever after, and therefore, I hope I can help her dreams come true.

I may not be able to wave a magic wand and make her account be loaded with cash, because I am also struggling to make ends meet. This is as much as magic I can conjure in order to help her, and her little princess have their own happily ever after.

Now…Cynderella is a single mum who is baking cookies for a living. She have a lot of touching stories to tell, but let it not be heard from my writing. Head over to her blog and read it for yourself.

I’m only here to inform everyone that Cynderella is selling homemade cookies and is taking orders for the upcoming CNY, which also happened to coincide with Valentine’s Day. The pictures below are from her own oven, made with love, and tender loving care.

These are Cynderella’s Chocolate Chip and Almond cookies. Imagine having marvelous cookies in your mouth, with the chocolate chip melting away, caressing your taste-buds, arousing your senses. Yes… it would sinful… sinfully delicious. It’s love food.

These are her butter cookies, with cherries on top. Why go for those commercial Danish butter cookies when you can have delicious home made ones?

Next up is her Oatmeal & Raisin cookies…

These, I tell you… these are sugared gem…a treasure, something you wouldn’t want to miss.

These are Cynderella’s almond slice. I bet they would work wonder, not only for the guests during that hateful CNY, but in bed as well. Imagine feeding this to your spouse in bed during Valentines, along with some chocolate sauce and whipped cream?

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t go that far. But I’m sure Merryn would find feeding this to her husband interesting, as she’s been ‘bedminton-ing’ in bed whole weekend, I heard. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Hopefully she won’t blame my little Kamasutra lesson from last week’s entry, cuz I won’t be responsible for any new additional family members one acquired as a result of spooning and forking without condiments.

Anyway, I’m sure all of these sweet stuff in the cookies would fire up anyone’s engine. It’s packed with energy, and aphrodisiac. One may not know this, but almonds are aphrodisiac, all right. It’s usually associated with ‘grounding energy ‘and tranquility, not to mention healing emotional wounds. (It’s true, I’m not just crapping here.)

Cynderella… or rather, Cynthia will be giving these samples upon request:

And anyone who is interested to order all of these love food for Valentine’s Day or for Chinese New Year, kindly place your order through this email: tan.aust@gmail.com

or…

CLICK HERE to visit Cynderella’s blog for further information. These cookies are sold at RM20.00 per container, and it will only be exclusively made upon orders. So, hurry up, and place your order now. *roll eyes* (No, I don’t receive commission for this either. Just doing this for Cyn and her baby)
