Colourful Traditional Cakes

I’m posting this up for the benefit of my friend. She’s a novelist friend who is from another part of the world. She asked me what Malaysians typically have for breakfast.

I told her we mostly have nasi lemak and roti canai for breakfasts (well, at least that’s what I usually have for breakfasts). And at times, we also indulge ourselves with traditional cakes. Some can be sweet while some others are savoury. Unfortunately for my friend, I’m the sort of person who knows how to eat more than anything.

Here are treats you won’t find at pastry schools, nor delicacies created at California Culinary schools.

Can any of you tell me the real the names of some of these traditional cakes?

image

Cucur badak, ondeh ondeh kacang and… uh…traditional sugar-coated donut…

image

Not sure what these are called, but they’re some sort of sweet apom.

image

Pulut udang… glutinous rice with prawn sambal wrapped in banana leaves.

image

Lepat pisang.

image

I don’t know what these are called, but I definitely know how to make these. I used to make these when I was younger. It’s made from a mixture of flour, water, salt and tumeric powder along with some meat and sliced chillies.

image

Kuih talam.

image

Apom. These are usually eaten with shaved coconuts.

image

Pancakes? Uh… I have no idea what these are called.

Cooling kuih sagu topped with shaved coconuts.

Chocolate kuih lapis.

Traditional pancakes.

Pink coloured kuih lapis.

image

Not sure what this one is called.

Curry puffs.

Thai Food Galore

Do you love Thai food? I love Thai food to bits, especially if they’re not from those fancy looking restaurants that claimed to cook authentic Thai dishes and yet when it’s served, it taste like something that came out from hell.

The Thai Fair near my house is back, and as usual I went to  eat their signature dishes like these:

Yummylicious tomyam noodles. This is my personal favourite. The Tomyam soup was perfectly done, unlike the one that I had in Little Pantry during father’s day celebration with my father- in- law last month. This Tomyam soup is really something to die for. It’s spicy, sourish and has the sweetness of seafood in it.

Then there’s sweet ripe mangoes served with glutinous rice and coconut milk. My husband loves this one very much.

We did not order much things as we were still full from lunch, but we couldn’t resist ordering ABC. (Shaved ice with condensed milk, syrups and various jellies as well as nuts)

I adore these food and I daresay that this won’t be my last visit as long as the Thai Fair is still there.

Cleffairy: At least in Thai Fairs they don’t dress up like Lolitas to serve the customers.

Sin-ful Cake

Everyone have been quite busy with their own family and work lately. I have been busy as well…with work, family, and the pressure of my husband studying again (Nah, I’m exaggerating. It’s not a pressure, but a pleasure as I love it when my husband decided to pursue his study again. He’s much more attractive and sexy when he’s studying.) and I haven’t been going out socializing too much. πŸ™ Did not have the time for it. *SIGH* It’s been hectic up til end of June.

Anyway, I was saying that everyone have been busy and have not much time to meet up like we used to… and Cynthia, being as thoughtful as ever, made me my favourite SINFULLY moist chocolate cake when I told her that we’d probably meet up at an event dinner that we both have been coincidentally invited to last Friday. πŸ˜€

She’s certainly thoughtful, isn’t she? Damn… now I don’t think I had enough of the cake. =.= It’s not too sweet (Cyn knows me best) and very moist. Ohhh… it’s so yummy. Thank you very much, Cyn… this will probably be my sinful companion during my writing hours in the middle of the night over a cuppa iced tea. πŸ˜€

Want some, ladies and gentlemen? Nah… you can’t have mine. If you want it, you got to hop over to her home bakery at CYNFUL PLEASURE and order it from her. LOL!

Cleffairy: Now, please excuse me while I go and stuff my face with more chocolate cake!:P

So-So Little Pantry

Last Sunday, my family went to celebrate father’s day with my father in law in a place called Little Pantry in iOi Mall, Puchong. Initially, I suggested us to dine in Yin Her Restaurant, Sungai Buloh cuz I thought it will be much more relaxing over there with the lake, the huge space and whatnot, but my sister in law insisted to go to this place instead. She said the place is nice and girlish and everyone would like the place and so we went there instead, considering that she mentioned that the restaurant owner is her client and she can get some sort of special discount for us.

Indeed, the place is girlish and have nice decorations in it. But unfortunately, I did not like it. Not my type of restaurant to dine in with children and whatnot. It is too stuffy and to me, it’s only suitable for girlish kinda girls and prim and proper kinda ladies to have your hi-tea over there.

But then again, I doubt that I’ll go there for hi-tea either. The place was as noisy as Monday school assemblies where the principal failed to stop the students from chatting loudly with their friends. I wonder if it’s the same on weekdays, though?

The waitresses also scares me with their pink Lolita outfits. I felt as if I’ve walked into some sort of  Alice in Wonderland nightmare where people play dress up and whatnot… (TSK TSK TSK!). The waitress who serves us is especially scary. I mean… did she really need to wear that sort of contact lenses that makes the pupil looks so damn big like some sort of ghost? OMG, I tell you, I could have sworn that I saw that sort of things in horror movies! πŸ™ If she’s trying to be cute like manga characters… well, sorry, it did not work. πŸ™ It’s not even cute!

The place was not children friendly as there’s not much space for children to move around and perishable decorative items are everywhere. Bad place to go with children and toddlers who are curious and loves to touch things that they saw. Children were not given plastic utensils to use and were given breakable utensils instead and I got fed up asking for plastic plate for my boy to use instead of their delicate ceramics.

Children are expected to entertain themselves while the adult eat with balloons, but then again, my sister in law had to ask for balloons for both my son and my nephew to play with.

We ordered various food to try, and I must say… it’s nothing to shout about and I’ve had better food elsewhere. The price was not friendly on the pocket either.

Take a look at what we ordered:

Salmon salad with fried egg on it. It was so-so. Nothing to shout about. They were not exactly generous on the dressing. Could have taste better and I’ve had better salad elsewhere… like in Marche with Smallkucing and family during teacher’s day. The salmon was a little bit soft and not bouncy. Not fresh? Not sure. I just had a tiny bit of it, so I can’t say much. But I like the lettuce though. It was fresh.

Fried koay teow. I did not touch this. It’s lethal to me cuz it’s infested with bean sprouts, which I’m allergic to. My sister in law said the taste is so-so, there’s no fragrant wok smell and was no as nice as those you get from hawker stall. The only plus point is it’s generous with bouncy, fresh prawns.

Stuffed chicken breasts. Very small portion. The chicken was stuffed with sautéed white mushroom and was served with a side of mashed potatoes and generous amount of black pepper. My comment on this? Well, I can roast and grill better chicken though my presentation might not be as nice. The chicken was kinda hard to chew and was rather dry. Quite a disappointment cuz I was expecting it to be juicy and moist instead of dry. πŸ™ The mashed potatoes are not up to my standard too. I mean… I did not know that mashed potatoes are supposed to taste sourish? I thought they’re supposed to taste creamy and buttery instead of sourish.  Anyway… the sauce was a saving grace. The black pepper sauce was fine and very addictive though the chicken and the mashed potatoes still needs to be improvised.

Creamy fettuccine carbonara. Again, nothing to shout about, and I would prefer it if they add a little bit more salt into this dish. It was rather bland. But then again, still an okay dish to eat.

This is supposed to be their authentic tomyam noodle dish, but I’ve had better tomyams in seasonal Thai Fairs. This dish is very spicy, an okay dish to order if you fancy spicy food. I wish they put a little bit of lime leaves inside of it, though. It would have made this dish much more desirable and they ought to go easy on the condensed milk a lil bit. The milk was overwhelming.

Soft shell crabs fried in tempura batter and served with a side of salad, alfalfa sprouts and dip. I nearly fainted when I dig into this. They did not bother to remove the carapace! Good grief! This is definitely not something I’d order again, period! Even cheap Chinese restaurants would make an effort to remove the crab’s carapace before cooking or serving them!

Their Hawaiian Pizza is generous with the toppings, but if you really want an authentic, thin crust pizza, I’ll suggest you call up Domino Pizza or Pizza Hut’s delivery. This one reached our table cold and the pizza was rather soggy due to too much sauce on it.. πŸ™ I bet this one would taste really nice if it’s piping hot. You might want to give it a try.

I ordered my favourite dish, fried calamari rings. Very small portion, and I wish they bothered to put salt in the batter! What’s with this restaurant! Are they out of salt or something? Their food are rather bland!:( But then again, this is not a seafood restaurant. So I guess I can’t complain much when they failed to live up to my expectation where seafoods are concerned. πŸ™

The only thing I enjoyed eating that day was their black pepper steak. The beef was tender and perfectly done. Too bad their mashed potatoes tasted sourish instead of buttery and creamy. Really, I wonder if it’s really supposed to taste that way or the potatoes were not fresh? Can somebody tell me if it’s supposed to taste that way?

Total damage for 8 adults and 2 children: Rm280 before ‘special discount’ which they have forgotten to give and my sister in law had to ask for it again after clearing the bill.

Overall, not a very good dining experience. The place was noisy, stuffy, not children friendly, and worst of all, the place that we sat was rather hot as well.  The air- conditioner seems to fail that day too and I feel as if I was suffocating over there and we practically had to shout to each other just to talk too.

Will I go back there? Sure… just for photography purposes, that is. The place got good lighting. Very flattering if you’re to snap some pictures over here.

Wanna try this place out? Well here’s the address. Hope you have better experience than I had. It must have been my bad day since most reviews about them are good. Comments on the food above are only my personal views. I’m not a food expert so it may not represent the real truth.

Rm29.90 2 course meal at TGI Fridays is back

I love eating at TGI Fridays not only because it’s affordable, but also because of the good food and the good service. It’s children friendly and the staff usually aim to please. And there’s more, kids get to eat free as long as there’s one adult paying for an entree dish.

Makes me really wonder why my brother in law insisted that you got to buy a main course dish if you want a free kid’s meal. o.O As far as I’m concerned, as long as there’s an adult who is paying for an entree, you’ll get one free dish from the kid’s menu. Strange. There must be something wrong somewhere that he was misinformed.

Anyway, last week, my husband finally got his exam result and he passed with distinction. We’re all very happy of course and decided to celebrate at TGI Fridays since their 2 course meal promo is back. Check this out, folks…

We ordered these:

Appetizer: Boneless chicken wings served with celery sticks and mayo dip. This one is is really nice. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Entree: Black pepper chicken served with seasoned veggies and herbal rice. The chicken was nice, but then again, the rice tasted rather weird. πŸ™ It is not exactly something my taste-buds would usually agree with. I think this dish would taste better if they’re to replace the herbal rice with buttered rice instead.

Free grilled cheese sandwich served with crispy fries and tangerine orange for the boy. Loved the gooey, melted cheese very much. πŸ˜€

An extra dish from the kids’ menu… burger patties served with a side of cheddar cheese mashed potatoes and tangerine oranges. Don’t be fooled by the picture. The patties are perfectly done and was not dry. The portion is also very big for a kid’s meal. πŸ˜€

And Minty Oreo chocolate mousse as dessert.

Total damage to the pocket: Rm64.90, inclusive of 1 refillable soft drink as well as 10% tax and service charge. (I’m sooooo NOT gonna vote for the current government this coming general election, mark my words! Got kinda fed up with the tax and inflation. Tsk. Do you know that with the 10% that they charged from the tax can be used for my regular breakfast and I can still have balance for it?)

Overall, it’s an affordable and satisfying meal with good and friendly service by the TGI Fridays Wangsa Walk staff.  The meal would have been much more affordable without the tax, though… but… nothing I can do about that.

Cheesy Potato Croquettes

I went to my regular egg supplier the other day, and I realized that they are also selling huge sacks of potatoes for Rm5 or Rm6 each, depending on what kind of potatoes there is inside the sacks. I got into my frugal mode and grabbed a huge sack of 8 kg for Rm6.

When I came home, it occurred to me that the supply can last for more than a week for my family, and I decided to get creative with it. Initially, I wanted to make rosti out of it (Rosti is a traditional Swiss dish made out of shredded potatoes) but rostis are rather bland to my liking. I opted to make potato croquettes instead.

Here’s sharing the recipe with you.

Ingredients:

1 kg of boiled potatoes

2 eggs, nicely beaten up

Cheddar cheese/bacon bits (optional)

KFC powder

Oil for frying (or if you prefer, you can bake it in the oven… but my oven goes KABOOM on me… so… yeah…)

Scrub your potatoes clean and boil them til they are fully cooked. Drain them and leave it to cool for 1 hour… or overnight in the fridge.

Shred or mash them up. Not too finely, though. You wouldn’t want to have mushy texture as it will break while you’re frying it.

Crack your eggs into a bowl and beat them up with 2 table spoon of KFC powder.

Add in some mozzarella cheese/cheddar cheese/bacon bits. Pour in the egg mixture and mix them well.

Heat up the oil and fry them up til golden brown.

Ooops… duzzin look so nice, but you can serve it with steak, rice or even eat it on it’s own with some dips.

Looks can be deceiving. I assure you that it’s yummy. Only 3 was left for me when I served them to my two hungry boys. >.< My husband says it tasted like cheesy hash brown.

Cleffairy: Hmm… perhaps I could make my own nuggets next. *GRINZ*

Arabian Knight

Well, not exactly Ariabian knight, but an Arabian cuisine night. Not long ago, I went to have these at Wadi Al Nile with Smallkucing’s family as well as our new blogger friend, Angel Bear.

Arabian mint tea.

The tea was nice and refreshing.

For starters, Paparazzi ordered hummus. Hummus is a is a Levantine Arabian dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is a popular food throughout the Middle East.

Gigantic Mulawah bread for just Rm4 to go with the Hummus. The bread is similar with our own roti canai or roti prata, except that it’s way bigger, flatter, crispier and is usually sprinkled with black sesame seeds. And instead of having it with spicy curry, the Arabians usually eat Mulawah bread with hummus, or potato stew.

Two scoops of ice cream with cherry on top each for the kids.

As usual, I go for my favourite Kabsa chicken rice.

My rice comes with tomatoey potato stew as well as special made chilli sauce. My boy loved the potato stew very much that he couldn’t help but asked for extra from his Auntie Mamarazzi. >.<

I had sparkling fruit drink known as Fayrouz. It was really nice. I liked the taste very much.

Angel Bear on the other hand, had Kabsa rice with lamb. Huge portion too. And just look at the generous chunks of lamb. She said it was nice and had no lamb smell whatsoever.

Mamarazzi ordered Mandi/Mandy Rice with grilled lemon flavoured chicken. To her surprise…the portion was really huge. And it’s enough for 4 full grown adults to eat!

Check out the size~! It’s so huge, and just for Rm15! I nearly faint when i saw it.

There was also Lamb Akhdah, an Arabic dish where lamb are cooked in tomatoey sauce and spices as well as sliced potatoes. It was really yummy. It’s one of my favourite that night, and would definitely order this again next time.

We had Banana Masoob for dessert. Masoob is a traditional Hijazi Dish and is basically bananas, (sometimes dates) and ground bread all mashed up together, served with honey. It’s a very nice dessert, and the portion was very, very huge too.

Drooling and wanna try some Arabic cuisine for a change? Well maybe you can give this restaurant a try.

Wadi AL-Nile Restaurant,No 72-0, Block J, Platinum Walk, No. 2, Jalan Langkawi, 53300 Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Tel : 03-41312356.

Cleffairy: Opps, there’s no belly dancing or dances of seven veils here. Only seductive food. Thank you to Paparazzi and Mamarazzi for the generous dinner treat. And it’s nice to finally meet you, Angel Bear. Pictures are not mine. They’re all courtesy of Mamarazzi and Angel Bear.

Those good old days are gone…

Those good old days where you can buy lotsa things with Rm1 (Around USD0.35) is gone. These days, Rm1 is not much of a value anymore. But thank God, every now and then I manage to find something nice for just RM1; like this nasi lemak for an example. (Nasi lemak is a local Malaysian dish, consisting of fragrant coconut milk rice served with condiments of fried peanuts, fried anchovies as well as sliced cucumbers)

These… these are a gem, very authentic and it’s very hard to find these sort of nasi lemak in Malaysia these days. These nasi lemak are fully wrapped up with banana leaves. These days, we only have the modern version of it; all wrapped up in plastic+newspaper or in white polystyrene, and it’s no longer simple. The modern ones are usually served with lotsa things; fried chicken, fried eggs, etc and usually cost at least Rm5 (USD1.5) per pack.

For Rm1, I get these…. 1 cup of very fragrant nasi lemak with served with a side of fried peanuts, fried anchovies, a quarter of boiled egg and topped with some spicy hot sambal.

I couldn’t resist adding my own omelet to the RM1 nasi lemak. The taste? Heavenly.

But by the time I finished eating the nasi lemak… I wondered why I couldn’t resist adding my own omelet to it. Is it because I’ve grown fussy? Or it it because like the rest of the world, I’ve become complicated and I failed in the most important thing in one’s life; which is to appreciate and enjoy life at the most basic and stop trying to be complicated?

*SIGH* I suppose the world suit me now. It’s complicated, and so am I.

Cleffairy: Those good old days are gone, and they are never coming back.

Sweet and spicy crabs

Every now and then, I will show my sadistic streak…by cooking. I often show it when I get a good deal… like this…I got this crab for RM5 each (About USD2). Cheap, don’t you think? I bought 4 of them, so that’s RM20 (About USD8)

I bought it when it was still alive, and got the seller to tie it up for me. I asked the fishmonger to kill it for me, but that feller was a part-timer, so he did not know how to kill the crabs. I ended up freezing it up in the fridge to kill it cuz I don’t know how to kill a crab either. Yeah, I know. It’s cruel to let the crab die slowly like that, but don’t worry. I’m sure they’re all in crab-heaven now.

After scrubbing them clean, I steamed up two of the crabs.

And made sweet and spicy crabs out of the other two. For RM20, I think it’s quite a good deal, especially when you get to watch pornography later on.

Yeah, eating crabs is like having a food orgy… so much bondage, torture, sucking, fondling, digging, fingering, slurping, licking… and more sucking (the crab, that is) involved. Pretty arousing and rather sexy, I must say.

Neway, here’s the recipe for the sweet and spicy crab:

Ingredients:

Crabs

3 clove of crushed garlic

4 tablespoon of tomato sauce

2 tablespoon of chilli paste

1 tablespoon of light soya sauce

1 teaspoon of dark soya sauce

1 teaspoon of sugar

3 cups of water

3 tablespoon of cooking oil

Sauté the crushed garlic with all the sauce til fragrant. Then transfer the crabs into a huge pot. When the sauce is done, pour it into the pot along with 3 cups of water or more, and cook until crabs are cooked and the sauce thickens.

Cleffairy: I wonder how much these will cost in the restaurants?

Kabsa Rice

I got bored eating the same old, same old food everyday, and decided to try something that’s not exactly Western or Asian in nature. I went to try something of a mix between Mediterranean and Middle East in Wadi Al-Nile, Platinum Walk, Danau Kota, Kuala Lumpur while I was waiting for my boy to finish his class.

The restaurant in question was having a promo, so I tried their set promo of Kabsa Rice.

Kabsa rice is a well known Arabian dish of spiced rice served with spiced chicken. More of less, it looked like the Briyani dish that I’m familiar with, but the taste is much nicer than Briyani. The rice taste superb and the chicken was well done.

Unlike briyani dishes that’s usually served with hot, spicy curries, Kabsa rice is accompanied with a bowl of stew. Don’t let the picture fool you. This tomatoey potato stew is something to die for.

The dish comes with a glass of iced lemon tea. Nothing special there, I can make better iced lemon tea.

Total damage for this set is Rm 9.90. Kinda worth in my opinion cuz the portion is very big.

Wadi Al Nile Restaurant is currently having this promo:

Rm 9.90 for a choice of Kabsa rice or Mandy rice with chicken and stew as well as drink.

They also have buffet dinner if you’re interested in trying various kind of Middle East/Mediterranean food.

I’ll be going back to try more of their dishes. Couldn’t get enough of it.:D

Cleffairy: One can learn alot about one country’s culture through their food. Don’t you agree on that with me?
