Beneath The Night Tree

Do I have a child? Julia DeSmit knew she would face the question eventually, but she didn’t expect it now. At twenty-four, she is finally content with the way her life has unfolded. A single mother to her son and young brother, she works at the local grocery store while chipping away at a two-year degree. All her free time is spent with her unorthodox family—her boys, her grandmother, and her boyfriend of five years. It’s not perfect, but Julia is happier than ever.

So when she receives the cryptic e-mail from her son’s father, Julia’s world is turned upside down. She hasn’t heard from Parker since he left her in a college parking lot nearly six years ago. But one look at her son—the spitting image of his father—is enough to convince her that, for better or worse, Parker is a part of their story. Faced with this new reality and an unexpected tragedy, Julia begins a tightrope walk between what was and what is, what she hopes for and what will be.

MY REVIEW

I was rather skeptical when I this book in my mailbox. I thought it’s going to be another of one of those dreadful chic-lit that could put me to sleep the instant I skim through the pages. But I was wrong, very wrong, as Beneath The Night Tree is a very moving and beautiful story.

I was immediately drawn into the lives of the characters in the story, and I find myself being pulled into their world where I laugh along with them and cry along with them.

This book taught me one lesson: We may have our lives planned, but there’s always surprises and unexpected things that comes along the way. It may be good and it may be bad, and we all must learn to live our lives one day at a time.

You see, the main protagonist, Julia thought that she had it figured out and her life is well planned after her unexpected pregnancy. She had new life and new boyfriend now, and she looks forward to marry him. But oh, how wrong she was. The father of her child reappear in her life once again and seeks redemption. Julia knew that she couldn’t deny him the rights as a father.

Beneath the Night Tree was written in such a wonderful way that I felt really close to the characters, and I actually cried when Julia’s grandmother died. It made me think of my own late grandmother.

Overall, Beneath The Night Tree is a very lovely read, and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good inspirational family oriented story.

Thumbs up for Beneath The Night Tree and I rate this book 4 out of 5. I would definitely prefer it more if there’s a sequel to this book and I thought improvement ought to be made to the cover to make it look more lively and irresistible.

I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to give positive reviews. All opinions are 100% mine.

The Bell Rock Mystery

There’s nothing much I can do when I’m down with hot and cold fever except for read and try to get some sleep. But then again, how the hell am I supposed to sleep when I tend to gravitate towards mystery books when I’m unwell? I got no mood for my usual romance fiction. Such a turn off when you’re sick. Same goes with chic-lit. Boring read when you’re sick.

🙁 I keep picking up intriguing books, and instead of falling asleep, I would lay awake and devour books, turning pages after pages… guessing who is the culprit of certain mystery. This time, I picked up this book:

The Bell Rock Mystery by Neil Wesson.

The story opens with WPC Kate Wood sorting through the archives of New Scotland Yard (modern day). She finds a set of notes on a case, the facts of which were never made public.

On Christmas Eve 1888 Chief Inspector Herbert Kitchener arrives in an Edinburgh Police Station. He has been sent to reconnoitre the various Locations for Queen Victoria’s Christmas Holiday. Whilst in the Station news comes through of a problem at the Bell Rock Lighthouse.

The relief keeper has been locked out. The Lighthouse is needed as a beacon for the Royal Yacht arriving later that evening, Kitchener and the relief keeper go to the Rock to investigate. On arrival they find a locked door and inside two dead bodies, the Keeper and the First Mate. The engineer though, cannot be found.

As Kitchener investigates, the story of how he came to be with the Royal Party unfolds. The engineer appears and the mystery of the dead keepers, Jack the Ripper and an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria’s life is revealed.

So… is this a good read? It’s an awesome thriller, of course it’s a good read. 😀 Left me wanting more.

Cleffairy: Reading is a form of adventurous escapism. When your body is confined, free your mind by reading.

Come and Get Me

Okay, I admit, I’m feeling a little bit naughty, and up for a little bit of a naughty read, and therefore, I picked this up from my ebook collection and read it. Come and Get Me by Alyssa Brooks. I’ve downloaded this ARC document not long ago, but I couldn’t find time to review it. The cover is rather provocative, and somehow, it slipped my mind as I wandered off to the genre of fantasy. So, here goes:

Just as preparations for her wedding are getting underway, Sadie begins to get cold feet. Although she truly loves her fiance, Dylan, she doesn’t think she’s ready for marriage. All of her fears hit home when she begins to have erotic dreams…of another man! One evening, the panic really sets in and she gets up, packs her things and leaves, daring Dylan to come and get her.

Even with the picture clues that Sadie leaves, it’s difficult for Dylan to drop everything and chase after her. Yet, he knows she’s the one for him and he’ll do whatever is necessary to keep her, even break out of his own sexual repressions to truly seduce her. But will it be enough?

Come and Get Me is a story of one woman whose fears become more than she can handle. Although I enjoyed the growth that both Sadie and Dylan experienced, Sadie’s means of expressing her fear was very childish and selfish. Instead of talking about what disturbed her, she blamed others for the choices she made and then ran from those decisions instead of talking to the man she supposedly loved so much. Dylan had his own issues and Sadie’s dare actually allows him the chance to explore his true wants and needs. Eventually they both realize and discover what they want in their relationship.

Come and Get Me is a fast-paced, sex-filled story that shows the way two people learn to handle their fears, both as individuals and as a couple. Come and Get Me showcases the many feelings that these two characters feel and will keep the reader’s interest from beginning to end, even if only to discover what Sadie will do next and the lengths Dylan will go to in order to rein in his runaway lover.

Is this book a good read? Well… it’s jaw-dropping and sensual. I shall not say more. Want a browsing pdf copy? You know where to find me. Email me at cleffairy@gmail.com for it.

Cleffairy: Oh, yes, this is an open challenge. 😛 Come and get me if you can.

Inkworld Trilogy

Whoever said adults could not indulge the children within them by reading children fantasy books? I do that pretty often, and I learned more from those children books than adult books.

Last weekend, I managed to finish the Inkworld Trilogy (ebook version, though) and I feel completely sated and refreshed. The child in me was ‘well fed’.

The books… are pretty much like The Neverending story… with huge twists, cha cha and samba.

Book 1 – Inkheart
One cruel night, Meggie’s father reads aloud from a book called INKHEART– and an evil ruler escapes the boundaries of fiction and lands in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie is smack in the middle of the kind of adventure she has only read about in books. Meggie must learn to harness the magic that has conjured this nightmare. For only she can change the course of the story that has changed her life forever. This is INKHEART–a timeless tale about books, about imagination, about life. Dare to read it aloud.

Book 2 – Inkspell
Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters came to life – and changed her life forever.

But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the original tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the magical ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval inkscape once more.

Distraught, Farid goes in search of Meggie, and before long both are caught inside the book, too. There they meet Inkheart’s author, Fenoglio, now living within his own story. But the tale is much changed, and threatening to evolve in ways none of them would have ever imagined. Will Meggie, Farid, and Fenoglio manage to write the wrongs of a charmed world? Or is their story on the brink of a very bad ending?

Book 3 – Inkdeath

The Adderhead–his immortality bound in a book by Meggie’s father, Mo–has ordered his henchmen to plunder the villages. The peasants’ only defense is a band of outlaws led by the Bluejay–Mo’s fictitious double, whose identity he has reluctantly adopted. But the Book of Immortality is unraveling, and the Adderhead again fears the White Women of Death. To bring the renegade Bluejay back to repair the book, the Adderhead kidnaps all the children in the kingdom, dooming them to slavery in his silver mines unless Mo surrends. First Dustfinger, now Mo: Can anyone save this cursed story?

Now… my say:

I would give the trilogy 5 stars as a whole. I wish the final volume had been tightened a little. The plot threads come together well in this fast paced conclusion of an outstanding fantasy series.

Beware, the books will capture you, and brings you into a world full of surprises.

I must admit, I can never guess what will happen with the plot. It’s turning and twisting and full of life. I only have the pdf version of the trilogy, and since it’s a good read, I think I’m gonna buy it. Anyone wants to read this before buying the hardcopy? Email me at cleffairy@gmail.com  or leave a comment here and I’ll send them to you.

Cleffairy: Don’t kill your imaginations, for you will kill the child in you.

What I’ll be doing this weekend…

Someone asked me of my itinerary over the weekend. My answer is: I’ll be killing people mercilessly and torture them slow and bloody. I think I’ll do that. 😀 I’m a little bit inspired, so I think I can kill off some people in my novel. While I was brainstorming the other day, I had this marvelous, evil genius idea for a new book,  but sadly, I’d just have to pen the idea and put it aside for awhile and let it rest so that my on-going work won’t be sorely neglected, just because I can’t concentrate and prioritize.

Besides giving people grieve and misery…I’ll also be devouring these…I just got them at a books sale yesterday. The usual dose of fluffs.

A closer look at my loot…

My usual dose of romance fluff…the two hour reads that will be in my backpack each time I go out. 😀 (Yea before you ask I do bring some of these 2 hour reads in my bag with me…sometimes I read them while waiting for my tea or meal in a cafe. It’s habit. Just to kill time.)

Besides the usual dose of romantic fluff, I got myself a fairy tale parody book…just the thing I need to convince myself that I’m not the only one who thinks that some fairy tales are ridiculous!

And, some food for the soul…

I know what I’ll be doing on my weekend. How about you… will you be feeding your brain a little bit and exercising your thoughts?

Cleffairy: Which one is true? The pen is mightier than the sword? Or action speaks louder than words? 😀

Don’t send a search party…

Hello everybody… my mummy’s away. She’s kinda missing in action. So here I am today. A guest writer for Over A Cuppa Tea. My name is Meow Meow. That’s what Papa and Mummy call me.

Wondering why mummy seems to vanish from the face of the Earth? These are to be blamed…

Books… her loot from some book sale.

Pretty neat, eh? She managed to grab these for quite a cheap price. Rm3. Each. All of it are mystery books though some of the covers are romantic in nature.

More mystery and adventure books. And guess what she’s doing at home now? She’s wearing her cowboy hat while reading Indiana Jones! Tsk tsk tsk. I think mummy will be getting a fedora hat from the night bazaar pretty soon, and God forbids she gets her hands on a bull whip! Mummy is lethal enough without a whip!

*sigh* Mummy is a sucker for romance. Could never resist romance fiction… even if they are not on sale! Tsk tsk tsk~ She grumbled on and on on why these babes are not on sale… and yet she still took it and bring them home. I can’t understand mummy…or any other human for that matter. They are just so weird.

But boy, am I glad that mummy did went for the book sale. She not only bought books for herself to read, but some magazines for papa to read, and some children’s books for me to share with big brother. 😀

*sigh* I don’t like to share though. I want the books for myself!

I like to read like mummy too.

See? Mummy bought me a book about witches… suits me, don’t you think?

But mummy told me that I must share… or else, what I’ll get is just the box that she used to bring home those books. *sobs* I guess I must share, mustn’t I? Wouldn’t want people to call me a greedy Meow, would I?

Meow Meow: Sharing is good, so you must share. And please don’t send a search party just yet if you don’t see my mummy around. She’s probably busy eating her books.

How many per year?

I used to be very productive. I could do many things per year. But as age catches up on me, I started to slow down slightly, and started to get lazier. But my passion for books never did die, and therefore, every now and then, I would pick up a few good books and indulge myself with the pleasures of reading and let myself drift away into the world where a lot of things is beyond my imaginations.

I used to be able to read 10 full length novels of various genre per day when I was younger, but these days, I could only read a maximum of 5 or 6 per day… and I only hit the number 10-12 per month, and only a maximum of 100 books per year since 2004.

I used to have the time to read more, but not anymore. I wish… sometimes,Ii could have more time to myself… to do things that makes myself feel good. But… it seems that even that is too much to ask now, because everyone around me is so demanding. If I could at least have 2-3 hours of complete silence a day, I believe, I would be on seventh heaven.

I ought to count my blessings, no? Thank God for small mercies. At least I still can read at least 6 books per day if I feel like doing some reading marathon. Some people don’t even have such privileges.

Cleffairy: How many books do you read per year? And of what genre?

Get your free books with Booksneeze

This is not a paid post, but rather something that I’d like to share with you bookworms out there.

If you are a blogger and enjoy reviewing books, you might want to check out this website known as Booksneeze. They will send you free books in exchange of honest review on your blog.

Yes, no catch. Sign up for their reviewer program, request for a book, write a review when the book arrived, and you get to keep the book. Sounds fair? It sounded fair to me. Besides, I get to request more books after each review is done.  I’m not talking about just one time deal over here.

For what it’s worth, I’m quite a hardcore bookworm who practically read for myself to sleep and I buy books more often than I buy my clothes, so getting free books in exchange of an honest review sounds really good to me.

How about you guys? Are you an avid reader? I read an average of 2-3 books/full length novels per week and my personal library is. How many books do you read per week?

Cleffairy: If you’re a blogger and yet not quite a bookworm or a Scrooge, I think Booksneeze is a good place to start a good reading habit.

Letters to Juliet

Cleffairy needs a little bit of a breather, and so, nothing serious from me today, folks. But instead, I want to share a movie trailer with all of you. I’ve watched this trailer more than 10 times, and definitely anticipating this summer romance movie, starring Amanda Seyfield. Yes, she’s the same actress who played Sophie in Mama Mia.

Letters to Juliet will be in Cinema in May 2010. So don’t go around looking for the movie just yet.

Letters to Juliet is about a young American, Sophie who travels to Verona, Italy – the city of love and home of star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet. There, she meets a group of volunteers who responds to letters written to Juliet seeking advice about love. After answering one lost, 50-year-old letter, she inspires its author to travel to Italy and embark on a journey to search for her long-lost love.

This sets off a chain of events that brings a love into both their lives unlike anything they ever imagined, and gives Sophie the courage to discover herself and follow her heart.

I was really impressed with the trailer, though I felt that they revealed too much in the trailer and the trailer itself tells the entire story. However, being a hopeless romantic with a mush for brain, I anticipate this movie nevertheless. Have a look at the trailer while I goes *poof* and starts writing on my script again for Script Frenzy 2010.

Cleffairy: Some movies will inspire you, while a great others will bore you. This one definitely inspire me. It tells me to appreciate what I have around me and live life to the fullest. It also taught me how important it is to do what your heart tells you to do.
