The Host

The Host is a sci-fi romance. Pretty much like The Time Traveler’s Wife. The Host could be categorized in that genre. For those who had been reading Meyer’s Twilight Saga, you’d find it quite hard to follow The Host if you don’t ditch the romantic vampire mentality. And if you’re a hard core sci-fi fan, you’d probably toss this book to the bin, because it’s not really concentrated on the ‘science’ part, but on humanity and the human emotions experienced by an alien invader instead. *sigh*

So, here’s the story…

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves – Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met.  As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

How does that sound to you? Well… from a reader an author’s point of view… I tell you that this is a romantic fluff! Okay, since this is a cross between sci-fi and romance, it is only fair that I compare the book with another sci-fi romance. A favourite of mine. The Time traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. While The Time Traveler’s Wife is completely touching, drawing me into the small circle of the characters ‘Henry’ and ‘Clare’ where they both had to deal with impossible love caused by Henry’s Chrono Displacement illness.

The Host did nothing like that. In fact, I’m a little bit dissapointed, and it doesn’t help that the book is written in first party point of view.

The Host should be a good read only if you’re a fan of romantic fluff. Otherwise, I suggest you to leave it alone. It’s not for sci-fi hardcores who expects thrilling actions and adventures.

Anyway, for those who would like to browse through this book before you buy it, can email me at cleffairy@gmail.com for a pdf. copy of the book.

They’re Not Your Friends

I have a really weird taste in almost everything. Be it clothing, food or even books. What people regard as not valuable, I consider it a treasure. I went to BookXcess Anniversary sale last month, and as I was digging away in the bargain bin of books that says going for RM1, Rm2 and RM3, I saw this book, ‘They’re Not Your Friends’ by Irene Zutell. It costs me RM3. Very cheap, for a good read.

Catchy cover, and it screams childishness. Absolutely female, vibrant and cheerful with the splashy pink.

But what made me buy this book is not the exuberance of the book cover, but the synopsis on the back of the book. This story is about a reporter. An entertainment reporter, and it made me think of myself before I left the newsroom and go freelancing in the field of reporting.

While I was specialized in investigative journalism, where my work revolves around digging for hard news, the character of this story, Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Love is the direct opposite of me in the industry. She’s an entertainment reporter, and therefore, nothing about her work revolves around nosing for crimes and high profile corruptions among politicians. Hers is pure soft news…with sex scandal and gossip thrown into her notepads.

Charlotte “Lottie” Love has a thing for celebrity. Actually, it’s more of an obsession. All her life she’s lurked in the shadows of Hollywood, desperate to step into the light. When she lands a job at Personality magazine, her dreams of red-carpet strolls, popping flashbulbs, and the attention of white-hot heartthrobs finally start to come true. Even Hollywood’s latest “It” boy falls for her, and everyone wants his story.

Can Lottie score the scoop? Ask Lem Brac, a British boozehound in the twilight of a mediocre career who knows an exclusive with the It boy would save his job. Lem looks for help from his new (and only) friendMike Posner, a young hotshot reporter just hired away from a New York tabloid.

But Mike has some damaging secrets himself that are about to surface. He needs the interview too, and it’s anyone’s guess how far he’ll go to get it. Welcome to the world of entertainment journalism and star worship, where you’re only as good as the gossip you dig up.

Good read? I suppose it is a good read. Some may find it boring to look into a life of a reporter, be it an investigative reporter who writes hard news or entertainment reporter who expose every little dirty underwear that you have in your closets, but I think the book reflects the politics of journalism industry. Thumbs up for “They’re Not Your Friends”.

Cleffairy: Here’s a message to those people who truly care for me and spare me in their thoughts. You are not my friends. But you’re more like a family to me. Not even family came close to loving me unconditionally without judging. Thank you for not just being my friends. You’re more than that.

Evil reads…

All right, sometimes, too much of sweet things can be sickening, won’t you agree with me? I mean, if you take too much sweet things, you’d feel queasy and you have a very high chance that you’ll be diabetic too if you take too much sweet things for long term.

So, to balance out, you need to watch what you eat, and… read. LOL. I read too much sweet romantic things sometimes that I get really immune to those passionate scenes and whatnot. Some romance book make me fall asleep. Some chic-lit really bore me.

Anyway, enough ramblings. Not long ago, Mamarazzi lend me some books… they’re all evil reads. Thrilling, and humourous… the kind of book that can make you laugh when you read them… cuz they’re just pure evil.

These days… if there’s long holidays, I try to catch up with my readings, and so… here’s some reviews for evil books.

Divorced and Deadly by Josephine Cox

As far as I’m concern, Josephine Cox is well known for her romance novels, but I guess she’s trying to look at things in different light through Divorced and Deadly. I’m glad she did. 😀 This book brought so much laughter and joy… well, at least to me. This story… uh… tells us how obnoxious and clueless men can be, and how shrew and vengeful women can be. *faint*

This book is told in diary form of Ben, newly divorced with Laura. The man can’t seems to get it why Laura is so pissed when he was caught having sex with some unknown women on their bed when she’s not around. He can’t seems to understand that, not when earlier on in their marriage, Laura forgave him for sleeping with her best friend. (Laura punched her best friend and gave her best friend a black eye for sleeping around with her husband). He really don’t understand it. Why his ex wife can forgive him for sleeping around with her best friend and yet divorced him because he had some uh…fun with some common whore he picked up at the pub.

Thinking that he could survived without her (which he can’t) he ended jobless, and moved in with his parents, and all rotten antics ensues…. cuz his ex-wife, being a female ruled by her hormones, will simply not let him off the hook. Even though she’s done with him, she just want him to have a miserable life for all the things that he did to wrong her. She doesn’t want him anymore, and yet, she doesn’t want anyone to have him either. (GO LAURA, YOU ROCK I SUPPORT YOU!)

Truthfully, this is a really funny read, despite of the horrendous title. There’s a moral in this story, though: Some men… will take things for granted. Forgive them for the first time, and they’ll wrong you again. And therefore, keep it in mind that some men cannot be forgiven, cuz they’ll keep do the same thing over, and over again! And men… cannot be trusted 100%. And if a man wants a moral from the story… well, let’s just say, don’t ever offend your wife. You’ll never know what she’ll do to you. (Hey, I’m a woman, ruled by my hormone, of course I think like this!)

Okay, after spending 2 hours reading Divorced and Deadly… it’s time to read Revenge is Sweet by Claire Gillman. The cover where the scissors cutting the tie says it all. Another hilarious read that will guarantee you to roll on the floor laughing for hours.

Revenge is Sweet is a packed with tales of remarkable lengths people have gone in order to wreak their revenge. Sometimes on pure impulse, sometimes deliberated after years of resentment…and many more.

Let me quote something from the book:

1. Wedding Anniversary Sex

A husband and his wife had a bitter qurrel on their 40th Anniversary day. The husband yelled ” When you die, I’m going to get a headstone that reads ‘Here Lies My Wife-Cold As Ever’ ”

“Yeah” she replied. “When you died, I’m going to get a headstone that reads: ‘Here Lies My Husband-Stiff At Last”

2. Bedside Vigil

Jake was dying. His wife, Becky, was maintaining a candle-light vigil by his side. She held his fragile hand, tears running down her face. Her praying roused him from his slumber; he looked up and his pale lips began to move slightly.

“Becky, my darling,” he whispered.

“Hush, my love, rest, don’t talk.” she said.

He was insistent. “Becky, I have something that I must confess.”

“There’s nothing to confess. Everything is all right, go to sleep.” she said.

“No, no. I must die in peace, Becky. I… i slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!”

“I know sweetheart.” whispered Becky.

“Let the poison work.” she added.

Revenge is Sweet is a lovely, hilarious read. A good guide for revenge too. 😀 Wanna get back at your boss without getting caught? Wanna get back at your husband for cheating on you? Wanna get back at your wife for two-timing you? This is the book to read!

Okay… I know I’ve been really naughty… so to balance out… I try to be a bit sweet at the end… you know, picking up a good poem book…but… I can’t resist reading this one:

The author of You Die;I Die must have a very twisted sense of humour. Despite of the terrible title that suggested murder, this book contains poems symbolizing the immortality of love and at times its fickleness. Moral of the story? Never ever judge a book by it’s cover. LOL.

Nottie, romantic, delicious read…

It’s a long weekend, and so, I spend my time chilling with some ice pop in my mouth while reading some good books. (What? The weather is hot, duh!) I got tired of serious books and biographies, so I decided to pick up something a little bit nottie read.

Irresistable Forces by Brenda Jackson

One week of mind-blowing sex on a beautiful Caribbean island. Of all the business proposals financial tycoon Dominic Saxon has heard, Taylor Steele’s is definitely the most tempting. All Taylor wants in return is for Dominic to father her baby. No strings, no commitments…just a mutually satisfying arrangement. Make that very satisfying. For a man with no intention of marrying again, it sounds ideal.

Taylor wants a baby, not a relationship. And sexy, intelligent Dominic seems like a man with perfect genes. Turns out, Dominic has perfect everything. Their “procreation vacation” is a whirlwind of sensual ecstasy. But when it’s over, will either of them be able to say goodbye?

Good book? Oh well, it’s a standard happily ever after romance. 2 hour read kinda book. Anybody wants this? Email me… cleffairy@gmail.com. I’ll send it over.

Cleffairy: When things get depressing, a dose of fictional happily ever after is just the thing I need.

Brida by Paulo Coelho review

“Sweetie, I know you like a book. When things get rough, you’d bury yourself with your work or books, as if they’re going to save you.”

Somebody told me that before, but I couldn’t seems to recall who told me that. I just remember that he is a man. Probably my grandfather…or my father… or maybe one of my uncles-worst, he could have been Perry White from The New Adventures of Superman.

I thought the one who told me this was wrong, but apparently, the person who quoted this knew me more than I knew myself. I didn’t want to admit it to myself, but the man was right. When things gets a little rough in my life, I try to bury myself with work… because that sort of stress and tension, is much more manageable. It’s just like sadness and anger. I find it easier to be angry than sad, because I can handle being angry, but I can’t really handle being sad or depressed.

Anyway, things are a little bit rough in my life at the moment…you know… considering it’s long holiday and there’s a lot of family occasion is going on. I fell into that workaholic pattern unfailingly, and I get really jittery when I have nothing to do to distract myself with.

Today is a very slow Saturday. Time seems to crawl. And worst… I found myself with nothing to do but wallow! (Cuz my characters refused to talk to me and if they are, they’re trying to make me their personal slave… forget I said that, I’m crazy, I know).

Then I browsed for something to read, and much to my pleasure, I found ‘Brida by Paulo Coelho’. Gosh… I’ve been searching high and low for this book. So I downloaded the book and read it quickly.

This is my first time reading Paulo Coelho’s book. He’ came highly recommended by Smallkucing’s Mamarazzi and Manglish, and so… I thought I’d try reading something light from him.

Brida… as I know… is nothing like his other books. Brida is a light and easy read. It’s a very intriguing love story.

Brida tells the story of young girl who is seemingly naïve, but she is neither naïve nor lacking in intellect, since she has had a few incarnations, in which she knew a lot about being a witch. Brida is a beautiful, ambitious, and successful person, and she has a very supportive boyfriend, Lorenz. The story takes place in Ireland during 1983 and 1984.

The story opens with Brida telling Magus that she wants to learn magic. What Brida doesn’t know at that moment is that she is Magus’s soul mate. This she will find out toward the end of the book together with who she is and what the deeper meaning in her life is, by getting transported to a parallel universe and through other supernatural experiences.

Who will Brida end up with? With a man who is not her soul mate, or with her soul mate? I’m not going to spoil the story for you, but this is a story about the conflict within all of us to be with someone whom we have known since long, or to be with someone whom we have known for a lesser time but who touches our heart more or to just leave everything and submit ourselves to a solitary life.

Very good read. My kind of story. Anyone out there want a a pdf copy of this book to browse through before buying? Well, email me at cleffairy@gmail.com or leave a comment here and I’ll email it to you.

Brida is available at major bookstores and online bookstores, if you’re wondering where to get Brida by Paulo Coelho.

You Changed My Life

How many people out there changed your life forever, and make you a better person by making you see things in different perspective and yet you have no idea on how to thank them?

Well, You Changed My Life by Max Lucado is a perfect gift for those who changed your life and yet they don’t know it.

This book spin remarkable tales of people who changed the life of others and inspire them to be a better person. They’re unsung heroes. They may be insignificant to the rest of the world, but they mean something to somebody.

They may be not Superman, Batman or even Ironman, but they save lives regardless. They are heroes in their own rights.

The moral of the story in this book is that each and everyone of us have our own purpose in life, and we co-exist with each other to support one another and live in harmony.

This book is a great gift book. I would recommend this to everyone who wants to show their appreciation to people whose existence means a lot to them. Perfect for spreading joy and happiness.

I rate this book, 4 stars out of 5.

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers for an advance reading as part of their Booksneeze bloggers program . I was not required to write a positive review and therefore, the book review is 100% my own opinion.

Faithful

When I first laid my eyes on the cover of this book, it immediately transported me to when I was a mere 17 years old teenager. I was sent back to the time when I was in college, where my boyfriend then, (now husband) appeared at the window of my hostel room, giving me a champagne rose through my window in the middle of the night.

I could still remember that night clearly. The night when he gave me the champagne rose. It was the beginning or our relationship.

I knew that I must have this book when I saw it on Booksneeze, no matter what it takes because it reminds me of my husband and I when we were young, and were deeply in love.

Anyway, enough about my love story. The cover of this book is really romantic and looks sweet, and that alone makes me wanna get my hands on it. I know we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, as what looks nice on the surface, doesn’t neccessarily be nice on the inside.

The saying doesn’t apply here though, because I found this book is really inspiring and… mesmerizing. It’s nice on the outside, and also on the inside. Wholesome goodness.

Faithful by Kim Cash Tate is about 3 friends who are struggling in their life, and in finding love. Faithful tells the life of Cydney, Dana and Phyllis.

Cydney is forty years old, still single with a ticking biological clock. She’s more than certain that she will find the right man to marry, but she couldn’t seems to find the right man. One day, she attended her sister’s wedding as maid of honour, and she found that her life is suddenly complicated by the best man’s whom in her opinion, is a complete opposite of what she wants in a husband.

Cydney’s best friend Dana on the other hand is married, but one day, she discovered that her husband was having an affair, and was completely crushed at the revelation. Dana found herself being thrown into a whirlwind of emotion that she’s not sure she could withstand.

Phyllis on the other hand is a devout Christian who is married to a faithless man, and felt that something is incomplete with her marriage. She couldn’t relate to her husband, and felt that she’s spiritually void. She longs for completion, and enters a perfect Christian man in her life.

Reading Faithful is like being thrown into the world of Cydney, Dana and Phyllis. Their world seems to crumble beneath their feet, and they’re barely hanging on. The three women are broken, shattered and hurt, and all they want is to stop the pain and heal once again.

Faithful is about having faith, and accepting that sometimes, life doesn’t go as you planned. You must learn to accept things as they are, and the world as it is, instead of how you want it to be. And this book also teaches you that all is never lost when you open your heart to God’s words… and also… honour your vows.

A good read? Well… the book is dramatic and emotional. Intense, no doubt, and you can’t help but feel for the three women portrayed in the story. A cross between a chic-lit and romantic Christian fiction.

Recommended to those who feels that their world is going against them, and in need of assurance that everything will be all right, and all you need is just a little fath.

I rate this book 4 stars out of 5. Thumbs up.

Love, Charleston

What if you heard voices somewhere, telling you that you should wait for your true love? Love, Charleston is a book about faith, and believing in God’s words.

This story is about Anne, set in the romantic surrounding of small town called Charleston, South Carolina.

“Stay and wait”

That is the word that has been haunting Anne when she was in the bell tower at Saint Michael’s Church in Charleston.

Certain that the message is from God, she stayed and wait for her true love in Charleston, South Carolina. However, sister, Della, and their cousin, Alicia, have their doubts, and was certain that Anne was just hearing things and was being silly by following what her heart tells her to do.

Is it true? could Anne have misunderstood His calling? Should she leave the small town and pursue her life like the rest of the people in Charleston? Or should she wait for her true love there, no matter what it takes?

This is a story about having faith in not only God, but also in yourself. Anne was determined to wait, no matter at what cost, and so she waited, despite of the words of others.

Would Anne’s wait come to an end? Will she find true love in Charleston after all?

I won’t give the story away. This is quite a good read. good for a lazy Sunday afternoon where you want to do nothing but just read something light and inspiring.

Love, Charleston by Beth Hart certainly will whisk you away into the land of hope, and teaches you to believe in what your heart says, and not the others.

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, I would, but only to those who likes a leisure pace in a story.

I rate this book, 3 star out of 5.

Twenties Girl

I borrowed this book, Twenties Girl by Sohpie Kinsella from Smallkucing’s Mamarazzi, and I couldn’t help but giggle like a school girl when I was reading this book in my bed.

My husband was really surprised, as it’s been quite some time since a book managed to make me laugh while reading them in bed. The last time I giggled in bed while reading was years ago, while I was reading not a novel, but comic books.

So… is this book good? Definitely. A light-hearted read, and I would recommend this to those who loves chic-lit.

This novel is about Lara. Lara has always had an overactive imagination. Now she wonders if she is losing her mind. Normal twenty-something girls just don’t get visited by ghosts. The spirit of Lara’s great aunt Sadie – in the form of a bold, demanding Charleston-dancing girl – has appeared to make one last request: Lara must track down a missing necklace Sadie simply can’t rest without.

Lara’s got enough problems of her own. Her start-up company is floundering, her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, and she’s just been dumped by the love of her life. But as Lara spends time with Sadie, life becomes more glamorous and their treasure hunt turns into something intriguing and romantic.

What I thought initially is just another normal chic-lit where there’s a bimbo of a protagonist trying hard to be someone in the world, Twenties Girl is different, because it’s not just a chic-lit, but a mystery. The mystery that revolves around Sadie’s necklace, and why it is so important to her til she couldn’t rest in piece until the necklace is found.

As Lara goes around looking for Sadie’s necklace, her life has been turned upside down, in a good way. She became more and more daring, bold, fun and also she sees things in a different perspective. Being with her Aunt Sadie’s ghost taught her a lot of things in life; which is to let go, and to accept new things in her life. By finding Sadie’s necklace, Lara also learn that sometimes, those who are successful in life and boastful of their successes, have a dark story behind of it.

Very good book, recommended for those who wants a light read. Watch the book trailer below if you’re too lazy to read my review:

There’s quite a few surprises in this novel. Rated, PG13. Safe read.:D (Somehow I wish there’s steamier scene… but, oh well…if I want that, I can always have a dose of my Mils Boon or Harlequin.)

I happen to have a pdf. copy of Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella. And if you want to read it, kindly email me at cleffairy@gmail.com, and I’ll email to you as soon as I can. Yup, no catch, just email me or drop a comment here, and I’ll email you a copy of it. 😀

What In The World Is Going On

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their Booksneeze bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review and therefore, the book review is 100% my own opinion.

What In The World Is Going On by Dr. David Jeremiah is about is a book that takes a look at the fulfillment of biblical prophecies in current events in our modern world.

The author sites specific instances where the Bible has foretold future events. Using Biblical reference he interprets the events and what they mean to modern man and our world.

Not only does he give his interpretation of the future, but he uses historical facts to prove which parts of the prophecies have already come to pass.Terrorism, the fall of Rome, Iran’s nuclear weapon capability, and the invasion of Israel, along with many other events, are all addressed in this book.

This book provide readers with insight into how the world will eventually end, but it helps us remain optimistic and continue to enjoy whatever time is left.
