Up Close And Personal With Sharks

It is a scary thought to be in the presence of sharks, what more to be dealing with these animals. But that isn’t the case for the Expedition Great White team who seeks to learn more about these beautiful creatures. Don’t miss the premiere of Shark Men 3 on 6 November 2012 at 9.00pm on Nat Geo WILD (Astro Ch 550) and thereafter every Tuesday at the same time.

The Expedition Great White team sets off on three expeditions to this spectacular region with some of the area’s most experienced researchers. “Dr. Hammerhead” Peter Klimley and some of his post docs form the core of the investigative team. With mother ship OCEAN and her experienced crew, they set forth to answer some big questions about big predators. Insight and adventure ahead!

EXPEDITIONS: Three expedition destinations within the Eastern Tropical Pacific have been chosen: The Revillagigedos, Cocos Island, and The Galapagos. They mark three key positions along the shark superhighways of these seas. How they each figure into the great migrations and are connected is fundamental to this research.

Episodes include:

Tagging Tigers

It is the same crew but everything else has changed; fresh science team, new shark species, varying landing methods, and in unfamiliar territory, the Revillagigedo Islands. Chris’ team and Dr. Hammerhead (Pete Klimley) will work together to try to help the scientific community learn about tiger sharks, Galapagos sharks, and many other shark species. The biggest hurdle this team will have to overcome is finding a balance between the differing opinions on how to land the sharks.

Hammerhead Islands

The Shark Men anchor at Socorro, one of the four islands that make up the Revillagigedo Archipelago. The hunt for hammerheads continues and with the help of the Shark Men Dr. Pete Klimley hopes to uncover the mysteries of shark migratory behaviour in this region. The question was to use the sling the scientists would prefer or use the trusted lift that the crew has used time and time again. But now there is a bigger question: will either of them work? The MV Ocean has been temperamental ever since they left port, but will she breakdown when they need her the most?

Tiger Escape

The Shark Men are challenged as never before. They hook three sharks including two giant tigers. But they get away. Even for these pros, the sheer power of the tiger sharks catches them off guard. Determined, they redesign their approach and start using the kind of tackle they use to land giant great whites. It pays off big time as a subadult tiger shark they name Sara Beara, is successfully tagged and sent on her way.

Tiger Bait

After a long stretch of nothing but frustration, the team is finally seeing consistent success mostly due to the realization that the technique used to catch great whites works perfectly on tiger sharks. Even though they’re all exhausted, the scientists and crew are now determined to catch and tag five sharks from five different species because they know that the tagging operations are part of an urgent mission to help protect and understand these magnificent fish.

Coming Unglued

At the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexicos western coast, the tally for tagged sharks is rising but so are tensions among the men. As the long and grueling expedition winds down, the Shark Men struggle to put personal conflicts aside to stay focused on their ambitious and urgent mission to save as many shark species as they can.

A Whale of A Tiger

The men are tired, tense and determined to succeed but the window is fast closing. One more tiger shark and 3 more silvertips are desperately sought before they need to pull anchor and leave the region. Expedition leader Chris Fischer keeps pushing the men to focus and keep working until the very last second.

Trouble In Paradise

Under the cloak of darkness, shark finning poachers boldly enter Cocos Islands protective waters and this is the first time the Shark Men have on-board security in case theres a confrontation. Under tense conditions, the teams main species for tagging are hammerhead sharks. Because of their bigger fins, they are a highly sought after species for slaughter.

Mission Critical

The Shark Men divide and conquer to get the job done, but that approach causes some safety issues. While divers scout for hammerheads, Todd is off by himself and hooks a giant tiger shark. The divers support boats rush over to assist Todd leaving the lead scientist alone in dangerous waters The tense episode is the start of a growing divide between the anglers and scientists on priorities and protocol. But in the end, the mission takes precedent and they wind up having their best day ever in terms of tagged sharks. Costa Ricas Cocos Island is a designated protected area and the rangers are keeping a skeptical eye on the men. But their mission is urgent as thousands upon thousands of sharks are illegally finned in these waters.

Aku Terima Nikahnya

I’ve been quite hooked with not only Malay novels lately, but also Malay dramas. I don’t know what has gotten into me, but somehow, I feel that it is really refreshing and quite interesting. I used to think that they’re rather lame… all they have to offer is just love, lame ghost story and the plot is somewhat a repetition. But these days, after following quite a few, I think they’re not so bad after all. In fact, they are quite modern and up to par with those international favourites from Bollywood and Korea.

The most recent dramas I’ve been hooked to is the dramatization of Adam& Hawa. Not too shabby, though I must say that the storyline a plot is a tad different from the novel.

Anyway, I stumbled upon one of the latest Malay movie known as ‘Aku Terima Nikahnya’, which brought the meaning ‘I accept this marriage’ or simply ‘I Do’ in English.

Check out the trailer here:

Quite an interesting story, but in my humble opinion, the plot and the storyline does have the similarities with ‘The Vow’

The only difference is that in ‘Aku Terima Nikahnya’, the one who lost the memories and forget everything is the guy, not the heroine.

Nevertheless, both are interesting in it’s own ways. :D  You might wanna check it out. Both are romantic, and if you’re a sucker for romance, you will like both of it, regardless the language.

Cleffairy: Thou shall not discriminate.

The Gangster- ANTAPAL Press Screening

Title: THE GANGSTER – ANTAPAL
Genre: Action
Was invited to the press screening of The Gangster the other day. So here’s what The Gangster, is all about…
The movie was inspired by the infamous Thai Gangster Era in 1956 comes the tale of two gangsters, Dang and Jod.
“Antapal” means a hooligan in Thai. But in the 1950s, young men fighting in endless, bloodied gang war are celebrities and heroes. People look up at them and they swagger around old Bangkok as if they have the world in the palms of their hands. But the military dictator comes to power and order a massive crackdown on triads and thugs, and young hoodlums fall from grace. They are either shot dead or thrown in jail. Two of the hottest young gangsters are Daeng and Jod, and they’re determined to survive the hard times.
From the rock n’ roll age comes the hippie decade, and Jod (Krisada Sukosol Clapp) and his buddy Dang (Somchai Kemklad) want to make a comeback. Daeng and Jod work for a powerful mafia, running protection rackets and controlling bars. At the same time two young men, Thong (Sakarin Suthamsamai) and Piak (Krisada Suparpprom), start their lives in the rough road of hooliganism and look up at Jod and Daeng as their idols.
But soon Jod begins to see through the vicious cycle of his life. Violence is not a guarantee of respect, and the police soon begin to make their lives harder again. Thong and Piak have a different perception in the dangerous lifestyle from the world-weary Jod and Daeng. As Bangkok changes and as the world changes, they have to resolve the conflict and decide whether they want to keep walking on the path of hooligans.

The movie is fast paced and action packed, so if you’re into that sort of thing, you might wanna check it out in the cinema. It will be shown nationwide starting from 11th October 2012.

Doomsday Preppers

Following a year when the daily news cycle has been dominated by financial instability, government coups and the latest disaster footage, one group of people believes this year could be their last. Whether anticipating a natural disaster like an earthquake or massive solar flare, or a manmade catastrophe such as economic collapse or nuclear winter, these men and women stand united in their unshakable certainty that we will soon faces tougher times – times when grocery stores are empty, water is in short supply, and electricity is unavailable.

Delve into the lives of otherwise ordinary citizens who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it in the new series Doomsday Preppers, premiering 17 September at 9.00pm on National Geographic Channel (Astro Ch 553) and thereafter every Monday at 9.00pm.

Doomsday Preppers goes inside the prepping subculture, uncovering a wide assortment of prepping styles and approaches, meeting preppers on their own turf, examining their methods and tracking progress as they think through every logistic and contingency plan. Preppers come in all shapes and sizes – men and women, young and old, they live and work like others. But their ultimate life goal is preparing for the end.

While stockpiles of food and weapons may seem over the top preparations to some, for doomsday preppers they represent basic responsibility and peace of mind. They will go to whatever lengths deemed necessary to make sure they are prepared if basic services should falter, and chaos and violence become the order of the day. Though unique in their beliefs, motivations and strategies, these preppers are planning ahead for a time when hardship and hunger turns citizens against each other.

Each prepper also receives an expert assessment from Practical Preppers, a company founded by long-time preppers who share their experiences and knowledge through teaching, training and consulting. The experts analyse the preppers’ chances of survival if their worst fears become a reality and they have to put their plans into action. Viewers are left to make their own decision as to whether the preppers are practical planners… or just plain paranoid.

Episodes Include:

Doomsday Preppers: I Hope I Am Crazy (17 September, Monday, 9.00pm)

Meet four individuals who prove that preppers do not come in just one shape or size. Kellene Bishop, a self-described foodie, amazes her friends by whipping up a dinner party entirely from shelf-stable foods, proving she will not sacrifice the finer things in a financial disaster. She also teaches a quick-draw shooting class and a hand-to-hand combat class that will help women protect themselves in case a massive economic collapse should breed lawlessness. Dennis Evers has trained his children with special skills to withstand a catastrophic financial collapse. His oldest son shows us how he can fashion bows and arrows for security, his daughters weld and stockpile fuel, his wife cans massive amounts of food, and his son-in-law is working on a solar-powered satellite system that will allow the family to communicate if chaos should break out due to hyperinflation. From his farm, prepper David Sarti calls himself the “hillybilly prepper.” Should our nation’s communications and transportation systems falter after an EMP — an electro-magnetic pulse, or sudden burst of energy caused by a solar flare that can take out any electrical appliance on a nationwide scale — he is prepared to use his home as a communications hub for post-Apocalyptic America, using amateur or Ham Radio which requires no phone lines, no internet and can be run completely on battery or solar power. And Kathy Harrison is a self-described New England liberal, preparing for “the big one.” In the event of a massive earthquake, she and members of her like-minded community are working together to garden, sew, can, and generally prepare for a world where supermarkets and retail stores are a thing of the past.

Doomsday Preppers: Back To The Stone Age (24 September, Monday, 9.00pm)

R.E.M’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” might be a good mantra for these three individuals who are readying for the end of days. Phoenix dad Tim Ralston is prepared for an EMP attack on America. He built a shipping container specially outfitted for survival purposes and taught his sons to defend the compound with weapons. Jason Charles is a New York Firefighter, preparing for the eruption of the Yellowstone super volcano. He’s storing MREs and water in his city apartment. Pat Brabble is a church-going Southern gentleman with a twist: he believes our country is on the brink of hyperinflation, which will unleash civil unrest all across the country. To prepare, Pat readied a secret room in his barn that is full of guns, ammo, and plenty of alcohol for trade.

Doomsday Preppers: Nine Meals Away From Anarchy (1 October, Monday, 9.00pm)

Are you prepared for the end of the world? These men hope they are. Mike Mester fears an imminent economic collapse will bring violence and rioting to his quiet suburban town outside of Atlanta. To prepare, Mike involves his whole family in stockpiling food, fuel, and weapons. He’s even trained his two German Shepherds to act as protection dogs when things collapse. Preston White, a computer programmer from Colorado believes there is a cover-up surrounding Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant. So he’s collected 11,000 types of seeds to help him grow his own food after a radioactive disaster. If doomsday arrives, Riley Cooper has invested his savings into a bug out shelter he hopes will protect his family from a catastrophic polar shift.

Doomsday Preppers: It’s All Gonna Hit The Fan (8 October, Monday, 9.00pm)

We meet three Americans who are making huge personal sacrifices to prepare for the end of the world as we know it. Former police officer Martin Colvill is a mobile prepper, who keeps all his supplies in the cab of his big rig truck. Utah grandmother Donna Nash is preparing to quarantine her loved ones if they contract a deadly pandemic, and Kevin O’Brien is uprooting his entire family to save them from the polar shift he believes will sink Florida.

Doomsday Preppers: Friends Can Become Enemies (15 October, Monday, 9.00pm)

We meet four Americans who give their all when it comes to preparedness. Real estate developer Larry Hall is creating luxury survival condos in an old missile silo. Coloradan Riley Cook is readying his family to live in a high-altitude bunker. Michael Patrick Douglas is training his children in primitive survival skills. Becky Brown is taking sharpshooting lessons with a sniper in order to prepare herself for a government takeover of Salt Lake City.

Doomsday Preppers: Into The Spider Hole (22 October, Monday, 9.00pm)

We meet three Americans who are desperately preparing for a great worldwide catastrophe. Californian Doug Huffman has plans to retreat underground when we face the next Great depression. The hippy loving Ed Peden is living in an 18,000 square foot underground strong nuclear structure. And the vibrant Canadian, Dianne Rogers is haunted by a reoccurring dream that she thinks is a glimpse of her future.

Doomsday Preppers: It’s Gonna Get Worse (29 October, Monday, 9.00pm)

In the eighth episode we discover the unique lives of three average Americans as they invite us in their home to show us their preparations for the end of the world as we know it. San Diego psychiatrist, Bradford Frank, is stockpiling medication in hopes of surviving a pandemic. Loving father and husband, Jeremy (last name not revealed by request), is predicting a catastrophic oil crisis, and is prepping his truck to run off alternate substances. Bruce Beach has built a bunker out of school buses to survive a full-out Nuclear War.

The Dark Knight Rises Movie Review

Now, let me be frank with you. I’m never a Batman fan. That feller is way too broody for my taste.I’ve always felt that Bruce Wayne is in serious need of a pshychiatrist and he could use some fresh air and more sun.

Ever since I was a child, I fancy the mild mannered Clark Kent more. (Read: I have red undies fetish. LOL) I’ve always been a Lois Lane material and is a huge fan of Superman, but I got to say, The Dark Knight Rises surpass my expectation. One would have thought that this particular movie will put me off to sleep within 15 minutes like it’s predecessor, but it did not. In fact, it kept me awake.

The Dark Knight Rises is is quite slow in the beginning but the pace picked up after the first quarter of the movie. There’s plenty of characters involved in the story, so it might be quite confusing for those who is not familiar with Batman. I feel that the scriptwriter did quite a bad job in the character development department. Those old fashion Batman starred by Val Kilmer and George Clooney was much more interesting, in my humble opinion. Even the villians in those old fashion Batman movies are catchy and entertaining despite the fact that they’re supposed to be the bad guys.

The characters in The Dark Knight Rises could have been given more room to show their personalities, but I suppose they made up with the superb action scenes in the movie. The action kept me entertained, thank God for that.

There’s plenty of jokes inserted as a filler and plenty of unexpected twist and turns in The Dark Knight Rises, so if you’re into all that, this movie is quite worth to watch.

So… did I like the movie? I can’t really say I like it. (Cuz I’m Superman’s fangirl…and Ironman, and Thor… LOL!) But I suppose it’s an okay watch if you like an action packed movie.

I would rate this movie a 3 out of 5 stars. I was given an opportunity to watch The Dark Knight Rises premier, courtesy of P1 Wimax and Denaihati Network, and I’m not compensated in monetary way for writing this review.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

I went for a movie  date with my husband the other day to watch the newly released ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’. Tickets courtesy of a blogger friend, Bro Framestone and myiMart. It was quite an interesting take on a paranormal thriller genre, I must say.

I’ll be honest with you. I was kinda wary of the vampire theme. Everything seems to be revolving around vampires these days…and now they’re making the former president of United States of America a vampire slayer? Umm… made me wonder what’s next? Hollywood comes out with the most funny things, and at some point, I wondered if they’ll be making the Obama’s family into a clan of werewolves.

Okay, enough of musing. Let’s get back to the movie, shall we? The movie is quite interesting but not suitable for children to watch, of course, as there are plenty of sexual reference as well loads of violence in it. When I say violence, I mean VIOLENCE as in real violence. Not just punching someone in the face, but there’s plenty of heads sent rolling in this movie. With the plain good old axe, no less. The vampires in this movie is just plain badass. They are vicious and destructive creature hence, their heads needs to be chopped off from their shoulder for a greater good. (Oh… the vampires in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter don’t sparkle under the sun…in case you’re wondering. :P)

If you want children to tag along with you to watch a vampire movie, I’d suggest you go for the Twilight Saga instead of this one. There’s no ‘off with the heads’ scene in Twilight, I assure you.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter blends paranormal occurrence and history pretty well. There’s plenty of Abraham Lincoln’s famous quotes, biblical and historical reference included in the movie as well. It’s an okay movie to watch if you’re looking forward to pass your time, but at some point it’s just plain ridiculous to think of Abraham Lincoln as a vampire slayer or a vampire hunter. The scenes in the movie is quite vivid, and the language used for that era was pretty much believable.

The movie has good CG, and it’s not for the faint hearted, definitely. A good watch if you’re the sort of person who goes for pure fantasy and won rationalize the whole thing.

I would rate this movie 3 out of 5 stars for the action and thrilling effects, and recommends this to whoever that’s having bad day with their bosses and whatnot. Good way to de-stress if you started to imagine that those vampires heads that rolls is actually those people who irritates and annoys you in real life 😀

Here’s the trailer for this movie:

And in case you’re interested to read the book before watching the movie, here’s sharing the novel’s description: Yes, it’s adapted from a novel, so be sure to check it out too. It’s way better than the movie, in my humble opinion.

Hardcover, First, 336 pages

Published: March 2nd 2010

Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

ISBN 0446563080 (ISBN13: 9780446563086)

Author: Seth Grahame-Smith

Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin, where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his suffering mother’s bedside. She’s been stricken with something the old-timers call “Milk Sickness.”

“My baby boy…” she whispers before dying.

Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother’s fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire.

When the truth becomes known to young Lincoln, he writes in his journal, “henceforth my life shall be one of rigorous study and devotion. I shall become a master of mind and body. And this mastery shall have but one purpose…” Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true life story of our greatest president for the first time-all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

GONE- A thrilling and suspenseful treat

Remember Amanda Seyfried? You know, the girl who was boosted to fame with ‘Mamma Mia’ the movie as well as ‘Letters to Juliet’ a few years back? Well, this time around, Amanda Seyfield is no longer playing the innocent, naive girl who is smitten with her boyfriend and can’t wait to be married.

In the movie ‘GONE’, she played a role of a determined young woman known as Jill. When her sister disappeared, Jill is convinced that the serial killer who kidnapped her two years ago has returned, and she sets out to once again face her abductor.

Jill was forced to face her greatest fear in order to get her sister back. In this movie, she faced a lot of hurdle and challenges, including which she was accused of being a paranoid and delusional when she told the authorities that her sister has been abducted.

While I was annoyed that Jill was placed in predicament where she’s all alone and gets no help from anybody in the movie, I have to say that it’s quite refreshing to see Amanda Seyfried playing a rather heroic and courageous role instead of playing a sweet-natured, hopelessly romantic young woman in dilemma.

Below is the trailer for ‘GONE’. Watch it and you’ll know what I mean.

‘GONE’ is rated PG-13 for violence and will be shown in Malaysian cinema nationwide on 10 May 2012. If you’re into a crime thriller, this movie will be perfect for you.
