Ge Tai- The Musical Brings Drama on Stage in Resorts World Genting

My family is pretty much modern and we don’t really observe the Chinese traditional culture that much apart from Chinese New Year and Mid Autumn Festival. More often than not, we do it merely for the sake of filial pity and out of respect towards the elders in our family. But these days, I’ve taken some interests in the traditional cultures in Malaysia, all thanks to JKKN’s musicals and Traditional Malaysian Orchestra’s series of performances in MaTiC that I’ve been attending, where they made cultural stuff not only fun, but free to learn.

I’ve been attending some of JKKN’s free performances regularly with some expat friends every now and then. It’s really fun. We get to dance traditional dance along with the dancers on stage and get to make more friends along the way, and so, when wonderful folks in Resorts World Genting presented me with the opportunity to watch Ge Tai- The Musical, I knew that I wouldn’t want to miss it for the world.

 photo IMG_8545_zpsmrc4pfok.jpg

So, what is Ge Tai? Well, for those who are not from Chinese background might not be familiar with this term, but here’s a brief definition of what Ge Tai is. Ge Tai are open-air concerts set up in various locations throughout Malaysia during the Hungry Ghost Festival in the seventh lunar month. One spooky thing about Ge Tai is that they are not only performed for the living beings to watch, but it is performed to entertain the dead. The Chinese believed that the soul of the dead came back every Hungry Ghost Festival and roamed about pitifully, and therefore these performances are to entertain them and make them happy before they go back to the underworld once one month is up.

In the olden  days of our ancestors, Ge Tai used to feature puppet shows and Chinese operas but now, these have been replaced with dancing and singing shows, mostly in Hokkien dialect. The performers usually wear glittery, vibrant-coloured costumes. Besides singing and dancing, they also perform comedy skits in rapid-fire talking.

The real Ge Tai usually spooks me. It made my imaginations runs wild, but Ge Tai The Musical that’s being showcased in Resorts World Genting is different thing altogether.

 photo IMG_8541_zpsria7qk7n.jpg

The high energy of a Chinese live concert meets the drama of musical theatre in “Ge Tai – The Musical”, a fabulous new show written by Jonathan Lim is a very touching thing to watch. It is not just singing traditional songs all the way like the regular Ge Tai I’m familar with but I could actually feel the heartbreak and joys behind the bright lights of the Getai stage.

 photo IMG_9266_zpsy1ixaqxi.jpg

Ge Tai -The Musical tells the story of how an unknown amateur performer in the 1980s goes through different trials and obstacles and ultimately blossoms into a getai star.

 photo IMG_9325_zpstpry2tlq.jpg

The production boasts a colourful set, evocative lighting design and over-the-top costumes and it is really interesting to watch with plenty of life lessons about love and kinships.

No spoilers on the storyline but here’s sharing with you some of the scenes from Ge Tai-The Musical.

Face-changing master fascinating the audiences with his skills.

Tribute to 4 Heavenly Kings Live in Resorts World Genting

Photographer: Adam Lau

I was born in the 80s and were raised in the 90s. While that era might not be as interesting, superbly fast paced or terribly hi-tech like the era we are living now, it was certainly the most interesting time to grow up in. Back then, it was safe to play outside without strict parental supervisions and not to mention that era also produced a lot of talented artists whose talents are considered legendary by their fans. I could still remember during my growing up years where I had crushes on singers and boy bands and would listen to their songs on radios on walkman over and over again without feeling bored.

One of my addiction during my growing up years were the Four Heavenly Kings; the notable “gifts” from the renaissance of Hong Kong entertainment industry, i.e. the 1980s and 1990s, were the four biggest Chinese male superstars constantly graced their fans with memorable songs and superb unforgettable performances. They were Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Apart from singing and performing on stage, these talented artists are also revered for their appearance on the silver screen to this very day as well.

While Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai have been taking somewhat a backseat in the entertainment industry these days in favour of a more quiet personal life,Wah D, Ken, Andy Wah and Leon Li — entertainers who have won acclaim for impersonating the four personalities are more than happy to brings us down the memory lane and help fans relive the heydays of the Four Heavenly Kings.

I’ve had the privileged to watch them perform with my family during my most recent visit to Resorts World Genting and thought that these four young men aren’t just the Four Heavenly Kings impersonators. They are talented entertainers in their own rights too. The four have won awards at the MCOMEI 2014 Fashion Festival and other competitions featuring impersonators. Beyond Hong Kong and Macau, the quartet has performed at Harrah’s Reno in the US and currently will be mesmerizing audiences in Resorts World Genting, Malaysia throughout August and September 2016. So, if you are a fan of the Four Heavenly Kings and missed their presence, it would be a good idea to pay them a visit uphill in Resorts World Genting and watch them perform in Tribute to 4 Heavenly Kings performance.

The Four Heavenly Kings look-alikes —Leon Li as Leon Lai, Ken as Aaron Kwok, Andy Wah as Andy Lau and Wah D as Jacky Cheung— at Resorts World Genting during The Tribute to The Four Heavenly Kings performance. All four were dressed in pilot uniforms exactly like the real Heavenly Kings complete with authentic singing, dance moves and mannerisms. Some songs that were performed were classic songs like Andy Lau’s ‘Yat Hei Zau Go Dek Yat Ji‘, Aaron Kwok’s Dui Ni Ai Bu Wan, Leon Lai’s Jin Ye Ni Hui Bu Hui Lai, and Jacky Cheung’s Er Lang Chuan Shuo.

Wah D performing. Wah D is a Hakka Chinese pop music pioneer and has won a number of awards for his work in impersonating Jacky Cheung.

 photo IMG_0209_zpssxyihin2.jpg

In 2000, he was the champion in the Beijing TV Jacky Cheung impersonating competition, and in 2004, he won a similar competition for Hong Kong’s TVB.

 photo IMG_0062_zpsynknmo44.jpg

Ken has also won several awards. In 2008, he was invited by HBS to perform at a Christmas concert and in 2011, he won yet another competition for being the “strongest vocal imitator.”

 photo IMG_0404_zpsth1fhw6o.jpg

He delivered an energetic and sensational performance during Tribute to 4 Heavenly Kings that night and got the fangirls screaming for more.

 photo IMG_0109_zps8i9ftmya.jpg

Andy Wah on the other hand has performed alongside with Andy Lau, in the superstar’s World Tour concert a number of times.

 photo IMG_0452_zpszuz6mo0n.jpg

Fans can easily imagine him as the real thing; something he has done successfully over the years in various places including Indonesia, Macau, Shenzhen, Fuzhou and Hong Kong.

 photo IMG_9903_zpsggekpctx.jpg

Last but not least, Leon Li. He has also won several awards for his impersonating efforts and has since 2007 performed with Wah D, Ken and Andy Wah in various concerts.

 photo IMG_0358_zps6nenzizx.jpg

He was Leon Lai’s substitute in the movie, One Night Surprise.

Watching them perform that night really brought us down the memory lane and it felt as if the real Four Kings were performaning that night. It was simply fantastic and if you are looking for something worth watching this mid-autumn festival, this is it.

Tribute To 4 Heavenly Kings will be ongoing from Aug 20 to Sept 9 (except Aug 23 & 30 and Sept 6) at 9pm at Genting International Showroom, Resorts World Genting, Genting Highlands, Pahang. Tickets are priced at RM129 and RM99. For more information on Tribute to 4 Heavenly Kings, please call 03-2718 1118 or visit www.rwgenting.com

The Kid From The Big Apple

I’m not sure where you usually bring your kids to during the school holidays but whenever school is out, I’d bring my son traveling. To me, nothing could help us to bond more than spending time together on our family trips. Our family trips are usually backpacker style and the destinations are always those away from the city and closer to nature.

Of course, there are times that the school break is too short to plan any trips and my husband and I opt to bring our son to the cinema for a movie treat or a full scale movie marathon instead. Cinema, you say, why cinema? Some would say that cinema is fairly an odd place to bond with your kids.

Well, truth be told. Cinema is fast becoming my favourite hangout place mainly because all three of us would actually snuggle together and enjoy what’s being shown instead of me and my husband glancing down on our respective smart phones, trying to catch up with work. You see, apart from places of worship, cinema is probably the only fun place that does not allow gadget usage during showtimes. Everyone will have to put away whatever gadgets that they have whenever they are in cinema, and this is absolutely good for us.

Yes. We are guilty of being overly attached to our gadgets, that but trust me, we do make effort to disconnect to reconnect and spend some quality time as a family.

Problems? Yes. Our son is still in primary school and movies have to be carefully selected in order to suit his age. My husband and I will usually choose children friendly movies or at the very most, movies rated PG-13 to watch together with our son during our movie outings so that he won’t only have fun, but benefit educationally from the movies.

Most of the movies that we watched are from fantasy and fiction genre, but here’s recommending a very good movie that you can watch with your family for the upcoming school holiday; The Kid From The Big Apple.

Anyway, no spoilers for the movie from me over here. There’s no joy in spoiling anyone’s fun in giving spoilers but I vouch for this movie and highly recommends it if you want to have a movie outing with your family that will not embarrass you with profanities or inappropriate scene.

Check out the summary below:

The Kid From The Big Apple tells the story of a little girl from New York by the name of Sarah Lin whose mother is a single mother. She’s all dandy in New York but one day, her mother had a little work crisis in China and had to send Sarah to her estranged grandfather who is living in Malaysia until the problems resolves. Naturally, being well settled in New York, Sarah rebelled against the decision and all hell breaks loose when she was sent to her grandfather.

There’s language barrier between the granddaughter-grandfather, culture shock, generation gap and many more.
The movie is not only fun but is packed with moral values that kids these days could possibly learn. A forewarning, though. This movie is both laughter inducing and at the same time, an effective tearjerker.

 photo 3687_777643355698810_7404046039870111964_n_zpswrwiaxhj.jpg

There’s plenty of heartwarming and touching scene that will most probably tickle your funny bones but at the same time, make you sob your head off.

 photo 946107_779964488800030_9174957121048822228_n1_zpsey6p2o8m.jpg

This is definitely a child friendly movie, I must say. I can guarantee that by the time you leave the cinema, you and your children will be taught a lil bit about appreciating life’s little pleasure, honoring friendship, family ties, bridging the generation gap, filial piety and most importantly, lifelong learning.

Here’s a little bonus for your conscience should you really watch this movie; part of the profit from this movie will be channeled to Mah Sing Foundation for the needy. Isn’t that great? You can have a clean good fun time with your family and at the same time, give back to the society.

The Kid From The Big Apple will be screened in cinemas nationwide from 10th March 2016. Early bookings is recommended to avoid disappointments.

Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen

These days, my husband and I made effort to spend time as a couple rather than just being a parent to our son. Having our son when we were barely out of college, we missed out quite a lot as a couple. We were always more anxious on raising the boy more than anything else during our youth, and now he’s quite grown up, despite being busy with our job demands, we try as much as we can to spend time with each other.

Going to the movies every now and then is part of our current favourite past time. 😛 sure, it may sound normal to most of you, but considering that both of us are living an extremely busy lives, even going to dinners or movies together is special. Especially it it is impromptu or during one of those working nights.

Problems? Yes. Plenty. Not on the money part but on looking for a nice movie to watch together that is actually worth our time. Watched Penguin of Madagascar together back in January and it was great. February was not exactly our month. We watched plenty of movies in February but most of them are lousy. Although I enjoyed my husband’s companionship immensely, I couldn’t help cussing silently that the movie was not satisfactory enough.

Was getting pretty wary and thought that I would have to be forced to be contented to just enjoy all the snuggling in the cinema instead of the whole movie experience, then came March and we were invited to the preview of ‘Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen’.

 photo IMG_20150317_014715_zpsngqcpgxr.jpg

Cute movie ticket. Currently keeping this as a souvenir and using it as a bookmark. 😛

 photo _L2_5579_zpsk0ia3b4q.jpg

We get to meet the casts as well. 😉

So, before I comment on the movie, allow me to share with your the synopsis of it:

 photo ABTMP3-A3size-poster_zps3dslpuvw.jpg

Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen

Genre: Comedy
Director: Jack Neo
Cast: Joshua Tan, Maxi Lim, Tosh Zhang, Wang Wei Liang, Wesley Wong, Justin Dominic Mission, Charlie Goh, Bao Shang Ze, Jaspers Lai, Irene Ang, Richard Low, Wang Lei, Aileen Tan, Chen Tian Wen, Yip Limei
RunTime: 2 hrs 30 mins
Rating: PG13 (Some Coarse Language & Violence)
Released By: mm2 Entertainment and Golden Village Pictures
Official Website:

Opening Day: 19 February 2015

Synopsis: Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen brings Singapore’s favourite recruits back to the days before enlistment in ABTM. Instead of reporting to Pualu Tekong, the Ah Boys are posted to the Naval Diving Unit (NDU). Returning to active duty are familiar characters ? Ken Chow (Joshua Tan), the spoilt, rich kid, who tries to ‘keng’ his way out of NS. Aloysius Jin AKA Wayang King (Maxi Lim), whose over-enthusiasm creates more problems for his cabin mates. Lobang (Wang Weiliang), the street-smart wheeler dealer, out to make a quick buck off his cabin mates. Joining them is new face Hei Long AKA The Black Dragon (Wesley Wong), an aggressive gang leader, who prefers to talk with his fists instead of his mouth. Together, these ragtag band of misfits must somehow survive 40 weeks of training in hell. Do they have what it takes to become one of Singapore’s most fearsome military units ? The frogmen?

So, what did I think about this movie? Good or bad? It’s good. Quite an emotional roller coaster ride despite the fact that the movie genre is a comedy and I was treated to the views of well sculptured male bodies. Worth both your time and money. I can vouch for that. There is plenty of character’s development in this movie and you can actually see how the characters transformed to being better person by the end of the movie. While the movie is hilarious in nature, there is plenty of moral values embedded along the way and not to mention not so subtle message on doing what is right although it may crucify you emotionally.

In all, it is a good movie, and yes. I enjoyed this movie very much and easily give it a 5/5 and I’m absolutely glad that I did not have to just be contented to snuggling up to my husband and sleep in the cinema.

eWana FM, More Than Just a Radio

When I was a little girl, my ambition was to be one of these three:

1. A doctor
2. A journalist
3. A deejay

I never did became a doctor or a deejay, I’m afraid, but I did pursue my tertiary education in Mass Communication and became a journalist for a short period of time. I suppose, someway…somehow…I did realize my childhood dreams, even for a short while.

Funny how life turns out…but no complains there. I’m now a writer in my own rights and I’m grateful and contented with all the blessings that I have in my life.

God is great and gave me what I want occasionally in His own way and terms. I may not be a doctor or a deejay, but He gave me friends who are deejays. 😉

 photo IMG-20141207-WA0055_zpsom5dt73z.jpg

Here’s a picture taken a few days ago in eWana FM, during a surprise birthday celebration for Kos Serani a.k.a DJ Koz, designer cum deejay.

eWana FM is a place that I consider a home away from home. A place that is more than just a radio; where I get to connect with a lot of awesome people in the media and entertainment industry.

The people on the photos…they are deejays, models and media practitioners. 🙂

From the surface, one would have the impression that the people in the industry are cocky and unapproachable, but the truth is far cry from people’s common perception. I have the privilege to get to know the models, the artists, the deejays and whatnot personally and I assure you that they are not only easily approachable, but friendly to boot as well. So yes…never judge a person from their appearances or their job, and never stereotype them for whatever reasons.

Anyway, eWana FM is going through a major revamp for their show segments and whatnot. It will indeed be more than just an online radio as soon, the listeners would be able to watch their favourite deejays live while they are on air via live TV stream. 🙂 Cool, huh?

 photo IMG_523835756836521_zps6i2wmrao.jpeg

My friend DJ Koz here will resume his show in eWana FM soon, and guess what?

 photo IMG_530854508240816_zps21xa2oei.jpeg
He is looking for guests who are interested to be interviewed on his show! So…if you have something to promote; doing business etc and is looking for good, clean publicity whatsoever, you may contact https://ewana.fm or directly contact DJ Koz at +60 16-278 1412 to be one of the guests on the show. 😉

The listeners will not only be able to listen to you, but could see you as well!
I daresay it would be a good exposure for you…and if you’re ever there in eWana FM and would like to get to meet me in person and get to know me,just give me a holler and perhaps I could go over and we could go for a cuppa or two. 😉

Monster University movie review

It’s Friday, and weekend is just one day away. Have no ideas what to do to spend some quality time with your kids?

Well, pack up your bags, (and don’t forget the kids’ comfort blanket) and head over to your nearest cinema to watch Monster University. Monster University is a real treat, and I highly recommend this movie if you’re looking for a fun and laughter filled fun with your kids.

Monster U is a prequel to Monster Inc. If you’re familiar with Monster Inc, you’d realize that the main characters, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other.  “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

I was invited for a media preview by TGV the other day and went with my son to watch it. Now, I don’t really make a habit to go to all media previews during the weekdays, but I couldn’t help myself this time around. Who can resist a good movie and popcorns with your kid? I certainly can’t, not when I’m a kid at heart myself too. I love superhero movies ( though I’ve given more than two thumbs down for Man of Steel) and animation, and my son loves it too.

We watched Mons Inc a few years back and we loved it. The prequel is no different. I enjoyed the humour, enjoyed the tongue in cheek quirks and the misadventures that Mike and Sulley managed to throw themselves in. It’s really a great movie to watch if you want some light entertainment. Definitely a movie you’d want to invest in if you want to de-stress. Guaranteed to tickle your funny bones silly! 😀

Cleffairy: Trying to live one day at a time and seize the moment instead of just being caved at home.

Man of Steel movie review

Nolan’s and Snyder’s fans, please get out of here. It won’t be pretty. Now, I don’t mean to sound like such a jerk, considering that I was invited for a media preview for Man of Steel by the good folks in TGV, but hell, I was practically cussing throughout the entire movie. Why? The movie is too awesome! *roll eyes* Well, awesome for an alien-ish movie that is, and I’m so, so glad that they named this movie ‘Man of Steel’ and not Superman, cuz it’s Man of Steel indeed and not Superman.

I have too much grouse on this movie, considering that I am a Superman fangirl. 🙁 Sure, the crash BOOM BANG in this Superman reboot is impressive. I’ll give that, but that’s just about it. There’s no substance whatsoever, and while Superman has always been about being inspirational, a symbol of justice and a beacon of hope, Man of Steel is nothing about that.

This movie is a waste of time if you’re looking for the traditional, before reboot Superman. If you’re looking for the romantic, inspirational Superman that you grew up with, you ought to avoid this movie like a plague cuz all you’ll get is the darker, alien-ish version of Superman. Below are my complains on the movie:

  • The man who played Superman a.k.a Clark Kent in Man of Steel is a British. Tsk. Shame on you Hollywood people. Traditionally, Superman actors are always true blue Americans. Hey, I have nothing against Brits, but come on, can’t you people follow tradition  a lil bit? He’s supposed to be an American! Farmboy if possible (Dean Cain of Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman fits this…American and a farmboy!) I appreciate Henry Cavill’s acting, but heck, if I’m desperate to see a Brit in a movie or something, I’d go back and watch the Tudors! (Yups, Henry acted in The Tudors!)
  • Hate the reboot storyline. No secret identity whatsoever where Lois Lane is concerned.
  • Lack of inspirational quotes and the humour? The humorous attempts in this movie is lame.
  • Clark Kent’s persona is seriously overshadowed by Kal-El, even though they made some crappy effort to show how Clark was raised in the Kent’s farm.
  • The ‘Superman’ is not very Earth friendly. You could see loads of destruction during the fight and Superman did not give a damn about it, unlike those traditional Superman who actually take more care while fighting enemies as to not damage the surroundings. It is understandable that Nolan and Snyder wanna make the CRASH BOOM BANG effect as impressive as possible, but I’m afraid the real Superman is not about going all Ultraman or Power Rangers while fighting his enemies!
  • What’s up with all the Kryptonians? Jesus, Zod looks like something that came out from a failed Alien vs. Predator movie!
  • The suits… tsk… I know Superman somehow lost his underwear after the reboot, probably because he’s no longer in a romantic relationship with Lois and no longer have the needs to show off his impressive bulge, but do you people have to make his suit looks like an armor that’s made from alien scale? Goodness! If I want to look at a Superhero with some scale as his suit, I’m better off watching Kamen Rider, now that’s more original! Seriously, the suit looks like Ultraman’s new generation suit…without the mask! 🙁 That crap gives me nightmare!
  • Lack of romance. This Superman has no genuine chemistry with Lois Lane. (Ya, ya, I know, this is a reboot and he’s not supposed to have any romantic relationship with her and whatnot, but what’s Superman without romance? It’s just another moody, PMS-ing Batman!)
  • Lois’s character has no depth in this movie, and you know what? The REAL Superman was defined not just by his alien heritage, but his relationship with Lois Lane. She defined the Superhero himself, it was notable in the comics that she’s the woman behind Superman. Plenty of superhero in Justice League wondered why he ended up married with her (before the reboot) despite the fact that she has no power whatsoever, but most noted that Lois Lane is the one that made Superman ‘Super’-moral, emotional support and all that. She’s not just your regular lost damsel in distress, mind you!
  • Perry White… is not white. Good grief, if I want to see Morpheus, I’ll just watch Matrix. What the hell is wrong with you people? Since when Perry White is supposed to look like he’s a gym junkie?

I can list a lot more things that I do not like about Man of Steel, but I’ll just stop here and just go back to watching Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman or Smallville.Jesus, I thought Superman Returns was bad in terms of storyline, but Man of Steel is much more worst. My conclusion is… if you like Twilight Saga’s setting and environment, you’ll definitely like Man of Steel. Enough said.

I rate this movie 1 star.

Cleffairy: You don’t need Kryptonite to kill Superman. Nolan and Snyder will do just fine.

Man of Steel Trailer

I’m having a little bit of a WTF moment after after watching the Man of Steel trailer. 🙁 Not really sure how to feel about this movie, but I have a funny feeling that the movie is pretty much on the darker side and very very alien. Someone ought to have banned Christopher Nolan from touching Superman and make him stick to making movies for Batman! 🙁 (Oh wait, Christhoper Nolan actually ‘killed’ my favourite Dark Knight too! I swear the man is as evil as Lex Luthor and Zod!) It seems to me that Clark Kent’s alien heritage is thoroughly explored in Man of Steel while his Earthling upbringing, characteristic and romance is completely ignored in the reboot.

The trailer is pretty impressive if you like the crash boom bangs in movies, but, it’s not quite the portrayal of the hero of my dreams and the beacon of hope that I’m hoping for. This reboot is not very appealing to me. Clark Kent has always been an integral part of Superman, but here, I can’t even see Clark Kent. What happened to the secret identity thingie? Where the hell is Daily Planet? And Perry White is not supposed to be a Black!  Goodness…I have a lot to say, but I’ll save my grouse until I’ve really seen the movie to do my bashing.

Cleffairy: I don’t think I like this Superman reboot. Where the F*CK is the red underwear? The suit looks like a bloody alien armor for God’s sake! Stupid reboot! What is plain Superman without Clark Kent? Jesus!
