Improving Literacy With LiteracyPlanet Wordmania Chellenge

Knowing that your child is different and can never have the same milestone as other children of the same age and below can be rather depressing and disheartening, what more we’re living in a society that emphasize alot on academic achievements and excellence. Throughout the years, I come to realize that although autism is just a disorder and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. But then again, people can be condemning and they don’t necessarily share the same sentiment. The blame is always on my parenting skills, no matter how much my child achieve, it’s not going to be enough in anyone’s eyes as…well, you know, their children are obviously advanced socially and academically

I’ll be honest with you, it’s one of the reason why I kinda stopped going out with friends with children whose age are close to mine or below. It’s just difficult, seeing other kids who sometimes show off their academic skills so openly in front of you or look at your child weirdly as if he’s the weirdest and naughtiest child ever walked the face of the Earth as they grow up.

Parents can be cruel, but innocent children can be much worst without knowing. Seriously speaking, some children whom I used to think of as cute and adorable are starting to look rather loud, rude and obnoxious to me these days, and I rather not remember them that way.

So, instead of continuously socializing with parents and children who continuously makes me and my child feel inferior, I only associated myself with people who understand and supportive of me and my child. You’d be right if you say that I can’t protect myself or my child from the cruel world forever, but I believe in the law of attraction. If you mix around with positive people who motivates you, you’ll attract good things and soon enough, you’ll thrive from all the motivations and support.

Anyway, enough lamenting. I’ll have you know that I’m constantly on a lookout on how I can help my son improves his communication skills and literacy, and I happened to stumble upon this apps, known as LiteracyPlanet.LiteracyPlanet is an online learning app designed to improve students’ English language skills through fun, educational games and activities. LiteracyPlanet enables parents and educators to harness the power of rich digital media to enhance language skills and build confidence in students. Created by Intrepica Pty Ltd, Australia, the app includes curriculum from pre-school right up to upper secondary school. Lessons are catered to the individual needs of specific students and involves challenging tasks that can target areas requiring improvement. Now, that sounds promising and a mum like me would approve; Lessons that’s catered to individual needs instead of lesson that’s based on a child’s age.

It’s pretty much an interesting apps, and I come to realize that there’s this ‘Word Mania Challenge’ 2014 held quite some time ago. Word Mania Challenge is Malaysia’s largest nationwide online spelling competition that introduces a fun element to English literacy through an interactive virtual learning platform, reaching schools across Peninsular and East Malaysia. Opened to both primary and secondary students, the Challenge required themto create as many words as possible in 3 minutes from a pre-set list of letters.

20 student finalists competed in 45-minute sessions with separate categories for Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary. School winners for the Top 3 Scoring Primary Schools, Top 3 Scoring Secondary Schools, and the Most Participative School from each of the five regions across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.Launched on the 2 of January 2014, the competition saw students vying for the top spots for each of the seven categories. Amazing prizes worth up to RM 1 million in total such as Samsung 4G Chromebooks, Yes 4G devices, FrogStore vouchers and LiteracyPlanet subscriptions for every student in the winning schools made the Grand Finals a thrilling event.

In a short two months, the ’Word Mania Challenge’ saw 1,618,550 games played nationwide, 35,000,000 words spelled, 2,760 supportive teachers, 70,000 student participants and 2,000 schools involved. The champions were announced at the Grand Finals back on 27th March 2014 and prizes were given out by the Deputy Minister of Education II, Y.B. Tuan P. Kalamanathan at the awards ceremony. The competition was held at the Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

All of this was achieved with only minimal publicity through social media, demonstrating the power of the Internet to make learning content such as the Word Mania game go viral.Online competitions such as the ‘Word Mania Challenge’ can positively complement educational initiatives. It is evident from this Challenge that online learning can significantly impact the language learning experience of students.Malaysia is the first country in the world to bring its entire education community together on a single converged platform designed specifically to meet the needs of teaching and learning. Through the 1BestariNet project, students have access to a personalised learning experience regardless of their levels of learning. Certainly, Malaysia stands out as a model of Internet education for the world.

A fine example of how the ‘Word Mania Challenge’ has changed students’ perception of learning English is the story of Muhammad Qasri Hakim Bin Hj Khairul Anwar from SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur. Coming from a single-parent family with limited Internet connectivity at home, he stayed back after school for hours, and at times resorted to borrowing a Yes 4G Dongle from his teacher,Puan Nadila Mohd Yusoff,to play the Challenge at home. “I never thought that learning English could be so fun and exciting. The interactive activities made me want to learn more everyday. I was determined to make a name for myself and my school by joining this Challenge.

Now, seeing this, I think that my son could benefit and be inspired by it too as he doesn’t really absorb the traditional and boring way of teaching well. This should be able to hold his interest in learning, I think. I have all the facilities and resources, and I definitely wouldn’t mind letting my child try it. If you’re one of those parents who would like your child to have fun while learning instead of just stare at the boring old whiteboard and memorize stuff, you might want to look up  www.frogasia.com/wordmania. Who knows, your child can benefit from it? We’ll never know til we try. 😀

Cleffairy: My child thrive once I stopped teaching him the ‘normal’ way as advised by ‘expert parents’.

PicsArt, Professional Photography Made Easy

I think I mentioned quite a few times before that my son is an autistic child who is verbally challenged and I’m constantly on a lookout on how to improve his way of communicating and the way he express himself. One of the activities that he loves to do to express himself is taking photos by using the camera and smartphone.

As time goes by, I come to realize that he has taken loads of beautiful pictures and I did nothing to really showcase and exhibit them. I thought that perhaps, editing the photos that he took and sharing them on social media would indirectly give him a moral boost  and positive encouragements to express himself more.

Problem: I’m a certified Photoshop idiot, and have no idea on how to work on editing photos to make them look nicer and much more presentable than it is already is.

But lucky me, these days you don’t have to know how to actually use complicated software like Photoshop to edit your pictures. Instead of struggling with Photoshop, you can simply download a mobile apps like PicsArt and work wonders on raw images.

image

PicsArt is a mobile apps and is available for free for smartphones that is running on iOS and Android. To download and use the apps, simply go to Playstore or Appstore, search for ‘PicsArt’ , install, download and open up the apps. Login with your Facebook account or G+ account, and you’re ready to rock and roll.

The apps is fairly comprehensive and pretty easy to use and navigate. Even my son is using it to make artworks out of the photos that he has taken with PicsArt now.

image

With PicsArt, you not only can edit the pictures and fix up some flaws, but you can make collage out of the photos in your smartphone gallery too.

image

Apart from that, there’s plenty of frames, themes, cute stickers and background for you to use with your pictures.

image

Sample artwork done by using PicsArt. 🙂

In-apps store is available should you wish to purchase more themes, frames, background and function. Sharing photos via various social media is easy with PicsArt too, making this apps my current favourite picture editing tool.

There is plenty types of PicsArt app for you to pick from;some are even specifically created for children to use, so if you are like me and wants your kids to make some sort of arts with their pictures and whatnot, you might want to give this apps a shot. I loved it and perhaps you’ll love it too.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo at La Mexicana with The Entertainer

Earlier on in my previous post, I did mention that life is constantly a challenge for me and things are never ordinary. And one of the things that makes my life worthwhile is that my husband makes time to go on dinner dates with me every now and then despite of being busy with work . Let me share one of my dinner date experience. 🙂 Not much on the date, but on the food that we had, considering that this is something pretty new to both of us.

It was 5th of May. And our Mexican counterparts were celebrating Cinco de Mayo. My husband and I decided that it would be appropriate if we’re to join in the fun by dining at La Mexicana@ Terrace Hock Choon in Jalan Ampang. And so, the night of 5th May, I dolled up and hailed a taxi to bring me to La Mexicana to meet my husband there. I nearly couldn’t make it. It was raining rather heavily, but I managed somehow in the end. 😀

image

La Mexicana entrace at Terrace@Hock Choon Jalan Ampang. Words has it that the place serves authentic Mexican cuisine.image

Stepping into the premise, we were greeted with strange deco. I suppose, they are all imported from Mexico.

image

The staff were always pleasantly smiling and ready to serve you.

image

The ambiance reminds me of those long-winded Spanish telenovela, and I almost expect a few men donning huge Mexican hats coming over to serenade to us. Anyway, my husband and I was in luck that night. Apparently La Mexicana is one of The Entertainer’s merchant and there’s this buy 1 free 1 offers in The Entertainer application. Meaning, since I have that apps installed in my smartphone,  I get to have 1 maincourse free with each mains ordered! Check out what we get to enjoy that night. 😀 (Note: Sorry for the low picture quality. I was too excited to meet my husband that night and completely forgotten my camera. I just used my smartphone. La Mexicana is not really photography friendly at night. The place was poorly lighted)

image

We started off our meal with Nachos La Mexicana Style. The crispy triangles of fried handmade tortillas was topped with melted cheese and beans and served with Pico de Gallo Sauce was positively addictive. Don’t be fooled by the picture, the portion was absolutely huge. It’s enough for 4 person to share. The reason why it looks so little on the plate is because yours truly have forgotten to take a photo of it before eating. 😛

image

Another starter, Ceviche Verde; prawn ceviche with mango and cucumber in spicy Chile Serrano and coriander sauce on a bed of lettuce served with nachos. This was absolutely refreshing and although the portion was much smaller in comparison to the earlier Nachos La Mexicana Style, I definitely wouldn’t mind seconds of this. I prefer this one more than the Nachos La Mexicana. Much juicier and appetizing.

image

Enchilada Verdes, consists of 3 corn tortillas with succulent chicken bathed in Salsa verde and topped with cheese. This one was creamy and rich and suits my tastebuds pretty well. 😀

image

And then there’s tacos, of course. We had Tacos Carmela. The tacos shells were stuffed with delicious prawns in a Chilli Chipotle sauce along with refried beans and cheese and topped with ripe avacado.

image

No meal is complete without dessert, and so we ordered the traditional  Pastel Tres Leche, the traditional Mexican milk cake that’s made from 3 kind of milk, served with walnut and topped with peach slice. Word of warning. This dessert is not for the health conscious or for the diabetic. The cake was absolutely sweet.

image

Another dessert that we tried that night was Crepas De Cajeta. They’re crepes bathe in burnt caramel milk sauce with walnut toppings. Overall, the dining experience in La Mexicana is exotic, but there’s room for improvements. I would love the place more if the food is served much faster and the waiter and waitresses are more attentive. But still, I enjoyed the night immensely. 😀 Earlier, I did mentioned The Entertainer apps, where I get values for my money while dining at la Mexicana, right? Well, here’s sharing some info with you about the awesome, money-saving apps.

Described as “Buy One Get One Free” incentive vouchers, The Entertainer marked its entry in Malaysia with a stellar list of over 825 offers from the city’s exclusive dining, leisure, wellness and entertainment venues. Included in this are also over 380 exclusive offers for Malaysia’s leading hotels such as Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur as well as relaxing propositions at The Slimming Sanctuary and Sothy’s.

Some key differences between The Entertainer and other group buying or discount websites out there are as spelt out below:

    • All offers are valid for a year – in Malaysia for the launch, they will be valid for 14 months from 1st November 2013 through 30th December 2014.
    • All offers are valid 7 days a week, excluding public holidays.
    • Vouchers can be used in multiples – each merchant provides three buy one get one free offers which can be used at the same time.
    • A maximum of four vouchers can be used for a party of eight.
    • Vouchers can be used with no advance notice (excluding hotel accommodation and spas). Booking terms that would normally apply for any of our merchants would of course be observed.

The Entertainer Malaysia One Month Membership is priced at just RM 49 and gives you access to all 400+ buy one get one free offers Malaysia’s hottest restaurants, nightspots, informal dining, spas, activities, attractions and more – for one month from the date of activation.

image

The apps is pretty easy to use and does not take much space on your smartphone.

image

As you can see, there’s plenty of merchants that you can redeem your offers from. 😀 Tips: Set the apps to detect ‘nearby’ merchants and the apps will generate the nearest shop/spa/restaurants that you can go and redeem your offers from.

image

But if you’re not looking for something that’s nearby your place, simply search for the restaurant that you want to dine in. In my case, I searched for La Mexicana. 😀

image

The search result will give you information on the participating merchant. You can see the contact number and address on the apps too.  So when this appeared, simply check out what offers you still have in the apps…

image

Click on your preferred voucher, redeem, and enjoy your freebies with your friends, family or loved ones. 🙂  With 3 vouchers per merchant, you can visit more than just once or include your family and friends in the 2 for 1 fun!  After your one month membership you can simply choose to upgrade to the full product for a further MYR 186, allowing you to keep redeeming your offers until 30th December 2014.

To purchase the Entertainer Malaysia One Month Membership for just RM49 just – https://www.theentertainerasia.com/trymyfor49  or search for ‘The Entertainer’ apps in the Playstore- and be sure to enter this unique promo code @ellie_cleffairy when you purchase. To sweeten the deal, the Entertainer will be doing a random draw at the end of the month among the readers who bought the one month version of the Entertainer Malaysia app. One winner will win the full version of the app for FREE! So what are you waiting for?Get yours now and start redeeming!

Track Your Period and Ovulation with Period Calendar

Okay. This post is for you ladies out there. I’m sure you have read about my reviews on sanitary pads, cloth pads and whatnot and while we’re on this women’s health and hygiene topic…let me ask you a question. Do you keep track of your monthly cycle? I’m not sure if you do, but I tracked my period, ovulation, symptoms and other stuffs I cared for every month through Period Calendar,  I’ve been using the apps for about 2-3 years now, and I love it to bits!

image

Period Calendar is a smartphone app dedicated to help you track all your womanly things and is downloadable for free on Google Play.

image

The apps is pretty clean, neat and straight forward. All you need to do is just input the dates of your period and the apps will do the rest eg: calculate your fertile time, safe period and even ovulation window.image

For those who are having an active sex life and would like to plan for babies/not want to have babies, there’s fertility alert function here on the Period Calendar. You can opt to have the apps notify you your fertile time or ovulation time if you want.

image

And you can keep track how active/inactive your sex life is by inputting the dates you had intercourse too. I find this function is particularly good for those who are planning to have babies. 😀

image

You can also record your symptom

image

And mood daily, just like your own personal diary. Pretty cool app, huh? I think this is pretty cool. The apps can sync to your email, so you don’t have to be afraid of losing your datas in case of anything, and no fret about privacy, you can set a password for you alone to access this apps on your phone. 😀

Organizing and Managing Email is Easy with ccGenie

My email inbox is always in a mess. I’m not very good at organizing it. It’s constantly overload with new emails, drafts, forwarded emails, contacts, web links, embedded images, links to items in the cloud, all kinds of attachments: documents, spreadsheets, presentations—and more often I’m not, I feel pretty much lost whenever I want to find important emails in it.

 photo Screenshotfrom2014-04-21145531_zps7235f1b2.png

My messy email. 🙁

🙁 I know I’m very bad at organizing and I probably should start learning how to manage my email better before any of my clients started to go banshee at me, but…but…I’m just terribly bad at organizing. There’s simply no hope for me in that department. Clearly, email management and cleaning up messy stuff is not my forte. But lucky me, a friend of mine introduced me to ccGenie Rooms.

So…what’s ccGenie Rooms? No…it’s not the wish granting Genie from Aladdin, if that’s what you’re thinking. ccGenie Rooms is an app to intelligently extract and convert the contents of your inbox into neatly organized, structured and shareable content. So,no matter what shape the email arrived in, everything gets sorted for you into convenient ccGenie Rooms. I’ve tried it, and I liked it.

Everything is automatic with ccGenie. With ccGenie, you’ll have rooms where it’s practically a workspace to store you stuff. ccGenie creates an array of content assets and groups these into your Rooms as Documents, Conversations, Notes, and People. Sounds cool, huh? Well, it’s pretty promising to me, as I’m hopeless at organizing stuff. My email is constantly in a mess.

With ccGenie, you can have a room and share your stuff with other people. But if you’re not sharing,, you just can keep it private. These Rooms are easily accessible anytime, anywhere, and works on multiple devices, and multi email clients, so no worries about ccGenie not working for the email that you’re currently using.

Basically, ccGenie helps you to organize your email and help you interact with others easily via Rooms. 😀 You might wanna check it out. I did, and I’m I’m definitely sticking to it as it helps me keep my email organized.

Awesomeness Overload at eWana Carta Blogger 30 with TuneIn Radio Apps

YouTube killed the radio star. Well, not really, but that is how I feel. I’ll be honest with you, I stopped listening to radio more than a decade ago and opt to watch YouTube instead for latest music updates. But ever since I got to know lovely blogger-DJ Lia Omey whom I met during my Sahabat Media trips, I started to listen to radio again and come to realize that listening to radio can be quite fun, especially when you know the DJ personally and there is a whole slot dedicated just for us bloggers to call in, communicate and have fun. Lia Omey and her accompanying deejay, DJ Azz sizzle like no other during their Carta 30 Bloggers at eWana FM.

image

Every Thursday night from 10.30pm-12 am whole bunch of us naughty bloggers tune in to her show to crack things up abit to show our support. I never knew that listening to radio could be so fun until DJ Lia and DJ Azz came along. Heck, even our celebrity friend, Iqwal Hafiz joined in the fun by calling in to make dedications during the show.

One thing worth mentioning during my first time tuning to eWana Carta Blogger 30 is that my husband joined in the fun and heat things up a lil by requesting ‘Kau Ilhamku by Man Bai’ and dedicated it to me. I thought that was seriously sweet and romantic, especially it is done in public where other blogger friends who are our mutual friends are listening to the show too. 🙂 Thank you. I’ll cherish the memory forever. *muacks* 🙂

One would think that you must have a radio to be able to tune in, but frankly speaking, time has change. I don’t own a radio. Well…not anymore. I used to have one when I was a teenager, but as time goes by, radio is simply a long forgotten technology.

These days I listen to radio by using an apps known as TuneIn Radio. The apps is downloadable from the Playstore for Android smartphones.

image

All you need to do is just hop over to Playstore and search for TuneIn and install it on your smartphone.

image

Open the apps

image

Browse or search for the radio station that you would like to tune in to.

image

And you’re good to go. 🙂 My current favourite is eWana Radio. Well, I’m a bit biased, my friends are deejays over there, after all. :p

Join me having fun in eWana FM Carta Bloggers 30..:) from 10pm-1am every Tuesday and I assure you that soon you will get to talk to your favourite celebrity bloggers too during the show, as they will be inviting bloggers every week to talk to you. *wink*

Cream: Awesome apps for Shopaholics

Having traveled a lot these days with my family does not make me any smarter. Well, at least not where shopping is concerned, as I am quite a terrible shopper.I’m an impulsive buyer. If I had it my way, I would probably just grab anything I fancy from the shelf while shopping. Alleviating stress would also prompt me to go on retail therapy, leaving me with buyer’s remorse soon after. All these habits would be fine if I am a rich woman with savings like a Fort Knox, but sad to say these habits are just killing me.

As much as I would love to stop being such a shopaholic, I got to admit that at times it is rather tereupeutic. So I suppose things can still be under control if I could make better desicions when I am on my shopping rampage.

Have you ever purchased something, or went to an eatery and upon finding out the price during payment, felt if you did not get the best deal? I always find myself in such a predicament, but lucky for me that there is a smartphone app to remedy that.

Here’s introducing CREAM, a new smartphone application currently available for android devices, with iOS compatibility coming soon.

So, what does it do? Read on below then.

Cream.io New Smartphone Application - Real Time Pricing Info

CREAM can help you start making smarter purchasing decisions. Leverage the crowd by using CREAM to get real-time pricing information from others to determine if you are receiving a good deal or not.Features of this apps include:

  • Unlimited amount of pricing questions to ask the crowd
  • Notifications when you receive feedback on your pricing decision
  • Price comparison tools to help you find more deals
  • Compare prices on the same product all across the world
  • Easy currency converter to convert foreign currencies
Download the CREAM app from Android's Play Store
BuzzElement, the creators of CREAM, have released the official beta version of their app on Google Play.CREAM is a consumer based mobile app and platform that leverages the crowd to help consumers determine if they are receiving a good deal or not on their purchase. The app is positioning itself to be the “Waze for real-time pricing data.” CREAM users have the ability to leverage large groups of people to help them determine if they are receiving a good deal or not on their purchase.

Download the CREAM app from Android's Play Store
Step #1: Snap a photo
So how exactly does it work? Well, CREAM app works bothways, meaning consumers like you and me do our part to post a photo of the item we want to purchase with its pricing to share with other CREAM users. It’s rather simple, in four steps you are on your way to participate in a growing community who will give feedbacks and interact, discussing whether the purchase was a good deal or not.
Step#2: Enter the price of the item
Step#2: Enter the price of the item
From the CREAM application itself, the first step would be to snap a photo of the item we want to purchase, be it food items, gadgets, or virtually anything under the sun. The user interface is really intuitive, where in three steps you are already on your way to share your would be purchase with everyone.
Step #3: Share it with all the users in CREAM.io
Step #3: Share it with all the users in CREAM.io
Feedbacks are almost instantaneous as well, as other users can leave a feedback, or give a thumbs up, or thumbs down to the would-be purchase or have purchased. This way, you will know if the deal is a good one or not, and subsequently decide whether to go ahead to buy it, or walk away. CREAM.io application gives us the option to give feedbacks on other users’ purchases based on our past experience.
imageI’ve been using CREAM for the past one week or so since its launching on my Android based smartphone, the Ninetology U9Z1+.
image

Check out the activities notifications that I received.Even though CREAM is currently still in beta stage, the amount of users have been increasing daily, with more and more photos being shared and hundreds of feedbacks given.
image

Here is what I usually do: simply snap a picture of the item they were looking to buy, add the price and add a quick description of the item.

image

It would then be instantly sent out to CREAM users where they could let the consumer know if they were receiving a good price on the item. Users could then select other places nearby with better deals and also recommend other options and items. The data would then be presented nicely in a chart graph for the CREAM user to analyze and decide if they should purchase the item.

Cream from BuzzElement on Vimeo.

Basically, CREAM is a downloadable mobile app for smartphones that uses geo-technology and crowdsourcing to help consumers around the world make informed pricing decisions. For more information on CREAM please visit – https://www.cream.io/CREAM’s initial focus is to build up a large community of dedicated CREAM users to make the pricing data more accurate and valuable. As the users and pricing data start to grow, CREAM will be able to use the analytics to create a real-time pricing engine using their proprietary technology. The pricing engine could then be used by travelers looking to budget for their next trip, brands who want to see their product pricing variations globally and researchers to help them predict global pricing patterns.
So what are you waiting for? If you have an Android based smartphone, head on to the Play Store and download CREAM. Their official website is at www.cream.io , with promise of iOS support coming soon. CREAM is free on Google Play and can be downloaded here at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.cream

Gearing Up For NaNoWriMo with Canvio Slim II Portable External Hard Drive

It’s October now, and I have less than a month to prepare for NaNoWriMo. For those who are not familiar with NaNoWriMo, let me give you a lil bit of an intro. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It’s is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-words) novel by midnight, November 30. But every year, I have a personal goal of hitting more than 100,000 words… so yea… I’ll be quite a monster every November each year.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

This year will be my 6th year attempting NaNo. One would say that it’s a waste of time, but I beg to differ. Participating in NaNoWriMo enables me to write without having to obsess over quality. It gives me confidence, and helps me to get organized in disciplined throughout the month of November. God knows that I lacked discipline and time management is not exactly my forte.

NaNo is always about fun, a pure literary abandon, but I could still remember the horror of losing my work in the middle of the month back in 2009 as my laptop decided to die on me, and I had no backup whatsoever. Imagine my horror, more than 40,000 words goes POOF, just like that, and it’s all because I rely too much on my laptop and thought it will not fail me. The fault was all mine, but lucky for me, I’m not the sort of person who gets demotivated easily, and I decided to write from scratch all over again. It was a close call, but I won that year’s challenge regardless, and I have learned my lesson since that unfortunate incident. I have learned to back up my work to my email and various online storage websites.

But backing up my work that way can be quite a hassle, and not exactly very safe as I tend to delete my emails and online storage hosting are not always reliable, so I decided to do it differently this year. 😀 I decided to go all out and spring clean my laptop in preparation for NaNoWriMo 2013.

This year, I’m armed with this:

Toshiba Canvio Slim II Portable External Hard Drive (HDTD210XS3E1)

This babe can do wonders to a writer’s and novelist’s life.

 photo IMG_0591_zps73b97178.jpg

Measuring 4.2 x 3 x 0.5 inches, the Canvio Slim II is is very compact.

 photo IMG_0592_zpsa91d82a2.jpg

It’s not the slimmest drive on the market, however, but it is chic and portable, so that’s enough for me. Here’s the detailed specs for it:

Toshiba Slim II Specifications

  • Capacity: 500GB or 1TB
  • Interfaces: USB 3.0 (backwards compatible with USB 2.0)
  • Spindle Speed: 5400 RPM
  • Average Seek Time: 12 ms
  • Cache Buffer: 8MB
  • Dimensions of 1TB (LxWxH): 4.21″ X 2.95″ X 0.49″
  • Weight of 1TB: 5.47 oz Max
  • Free 10GB Cloud Storage

Canvio Slim II’s casing is made of aluminum instead of plastic. A big plus point here. It looks expensive and nice. Still, the drive is light, great for those on the go.

 photo IMG_0593_zpsaffd4194.jpg

On one side, it has a Micro-USB 3.0 port, which works with any standard Micro USB 3.0 cable (there’s one included in the box).

The drive is bus-powered, meaning it draws its electricity through the USB port to which it’s connected. The external hard drive worked with all USB 3.0 ports and USB 2.0 ports without problems. It has one interesting feature which I noted, which is its status light in one corner.

This light turns on when the external drive is plugged in, turns off when it’s not in use, and and flashes to indicate data activity. The color of the light changes to white if you use it with a USB 2.0 port and to blue when it’s plugged into a USB 3.0 port. This is very helpful for those who don’t know which type of USB port they’re using.

The Canvio Slim II lets you store your files in a centralized place next to your computer, giving you easy access to your files whenever you need them. It allows you to safeguard your valuable data and is preloaded easy-to-use backup software, o Schedule automatic backup File, folder and full system backup and recovery Password-Protected encryption for your backed up files (up to 256-bit).

You know what that means? That means no one could steal your work, your pictures, and whatever you decided to store in this external hard drive.

The Toshiba Canvio Slim II Portable External Hard Drive is PC and Mac Compatible. Toshiba Canvio Slim II Portable Drives are pre-formatted NTFS for Windows 8, 7, and Windows XP. Plus, the drive comes with a NTFS driver for Mac allowing you to store and access files from the PC and Mac without reformatting. It works okay on machine that’s running on Linux too (tested on Ubuntu), though the speed is rather mediocre on machines that’s running on that particular OS. This device is a 3.0 USB device, so it runs better on new laptops and high specs machines.

Other than that, it also comes with a few other software applications, including NTI Backup Now Ez, Pogoplug PC, and HDD Password Tool. The first two are available only for Windows and the last one is available for both Windows and Mac. You can clone and restore your computer easily with NTI Backup Now EZ full system backup in case of a PC crash.

It is also mobile friendly. Yups, you’re reading that right. This babe allows you secure access to content remotely from mobile devices. More and more users are storing their files on clouds like Dropbox and Google Drive, hard drive makers are increasingly adding some sort of mobile access to their devices to make it easier for users to access their files when they don’t have the physical drive with them, and Toshiba did exactly just that.

Pogoplug software (worth USD$29.95) for PC/Mac, enable access files in your hard drive anywhere from tablet or smartphone. Do note that if you want to use this function, Internet connection is required. (Requires installation of free Pogoplug app available at Apple App Store and Google Play Store.)

With this Toshiba Canvio Slim II Portable External Hard Drive, you can access and share content from any device anywhere via the Internet and can upload and download content from any device easily.  Pretty awesome, cuz this time around, I’ll probably attempt writing from my mobile. I could definitely benefit from this function, and I bet those who loves to take loads of photos with their mobile could benefit from this too. 😀

The Password HDD Tool software that guards the content of the Canvio Slim II with a password to prevent unauthorized access. And finally, NTI Backup Now Ez is an easy-to-use and effective backup software that can be set to work by itself once installed.

So ladies and gentlemen, if you’re looking for an external HDD with great performance and value for money, I think Canvio Slim II External HD is quite a safe bet. It cost only RM279 for 1TB and will be available in Malaysian market in October 2013.

Cleffairy: Love the fact that this thing will prevent unauthorized drive access. I always hated it when people snoop around my stuff at home.

Stretching My Ringgits

I know that this ranting comes a tad late, but since Malaysian government has decided that it’s gonna be awesome if they raise the fuel price by 20 cent. The folks in parliament and the smartass economists seems to think that 20cent increase will not be a burden to the citizens, but I beg to differ. The increase has terrible domino effect as when fuel price is increased, the rest of the goods will follow suit and the cost of living will point to the sky, and will never, ever go down again, even if fuel price decrease in the future (which I highly doubt).

I’ve been feeling quite a pinch in my pocket ever since the fuel price increase, and I bet most of you shares the same sentiment. I know, I know, we’re all in the same boat. Everything is getting expensive, and yet our buying power is getting weaker. I used to be able to feed my entire family with just RM100 per week, but not anymore. If I were to shop for groceries, I would have to bring more than just Rm100 to get everything that I need for one week of supplies. So they say, if you can’t afford to buy something, just omit it from your list or get something equivalent with cheaper price to adapt to the economic environment. But…but…but, those fellas in parliament and the smart fellas in banks says it’s not supposed to be a burden…so WHY??? WHY???? Why do I have to lower down my standards of living and go backwards? I’m supposed to go forward. MALAYSIA IS SUPPOSED TO GO FORWARD! NOT BACKWARDS.

*SIGH* Since the recent fuel hike, I noticed that I’ve been paying at least 20% extra for everything. Wow… I suppose this is very healthy for our national treasury reserve, huh? It must be *bling bling bling* with the citizen’s Ringgits by now.

I’m not exactly a happy camper right now. I used to earn less, but spend more and still have extras in the savings at the end of the day. But now…I’m earning more than before and yet I still can’t spend more though and I have almost nothing in the account by the end of the day. I don’t believe in lowering my standard of living to adapt with the current economic environment. To lower down my standard of living is like cutting off meals from a child who is growing up. How can you feed your child less when he/she needs the nutrients to grow up?

So what can we do? We can sit here and complain about our predicament… or…we can find a way out to at least maintain our standard of living with the low Ringgit value. I’m no politician or economist (oh, God forbids!) but I do know a trick or two to combat the awful economic environment and maintain my living standards.

One of it is to make the most out of nothing. Did I get you confused, yet? Well, take this for an example. I’m a smartphone user. And I discovered that there are plenty of apps out there that gives you benefit in terms of voucher redemption. Among them is CellAds.

So what is CellAds? CellAds is a mobile application and mobile content advertising solution, available for Android and Blackberry users.

CellAds is an advertising application developed by Cell Adverts Solution Pvt. Ltd. for smartphones. It will display ads on smart phone screens when you receive calls or SMS and points will be credited into your account after that.

Here is how you can collect points to redeem various kinds of voucher:
First time download = 50 Ads.Point
Each time a pop-up ad appears during an incoming call and SMS = 5 Ads.Point
Friend invite = 200 Ads. Point
Click on any ads in the “Ads World” = 5 Ads. Point every day

The ads are not permanent and you can cancel them off anytime you want.

Here’s a video on how it works.

CellAds in a nutshell: Download, install, use it and redeem goodies and cash vouchers. So far, you can redeem KFC, McD, PizzaHut cash voucher. On a diet and wants something fun? That’s fine, you can redeem GSC Cinema cash voucher instead. Apart from that, you can also redeem mobile topup values.

So yea…if you wanna stretch your Ringgits, this is one of the way you can do it. This is the modern and a much more convenient version of coupon-ing, I must say. You can enjoy the benefit of coupons without having to cut off any coupons. 😀

CellAds apps is free to download. For more info, visit their website HERE and LIKE their Facebook Page HERE for updates.

Cleffairy: I usually hate popup ads, but hey…I’d do anything to stretch my Ringgits these days. After all, I’m a big fan of KFC and McD. Who am I to say no to things like this? It doesn’t cost me money, so yea… better redeem vouchers by using accumulated points to treat my kid with fast food rather than use my own money and use the ‘extra’ on something else. 😀
