The Power of Interactive Play Parenting Workshop

I pity kids these days. Their lives are packed with schedules. Sometimes, seeing the trend and the education system, I feel that the children were not given a chance to enjoy their childhood. They’re not only made to do homeworks at the tender age of 3 during their pre-school years, but they also spend more time in front of the idiot box than playing too.

Playing is the most natural thing to do for any individual, but what you may not know is that there’s so much more to it than just having fun.

But in recent years, the amount of parents who have started to use technology as a substitute to spending actual quality time with their children is increasing at an alarming rate. Many disregard the importance of interaction or play with their children.

Playing is the best means in helping children with brain development and learning. When children can actively manipulate and explore toys in their environment, they learn best. Adults playing together with children will enhance the relationship between the parent/adult and child which is pivotal in a child’s development.

Fisher-Price, a firm believer in the development of children through play and bonding notices this trend.Through The Power of “Interactive” Play Workshop, Fisher-Price will be sharing the benefits of play through the five development stages (Sensory Stimulation, Sitting & Reaching, Speech Development, On the Go and Walker & Rider) and to further encourage adults to spend more time with children.

The Power of “Interactive” Play Parenting Workshop will exhibit the different kinds of activities and exercises that adults can have with children. It will further elaborate on the different tools that can be used to further assist with the different development stages of children.

Pests are not pets

Pests. What do you think of them? Oh, you know, disgusting creatures like insects, rodents and whatnot? I hate pests. Hate is an understatement. I loathe pests, actually, even though I have some soft spots for animals in my heart.

I don’t know what went wrong, but recently I discovered that some of my books and some of the furnitures are being destroyed by pests. I can’t be sure what it is. Is it termites? Roaches? I have no idea…but there are tiny holes everywhere, evidently being eaten by unidentified insects. I couldn’t find the source, but I have taken the initiative to get rid of whatever pests there is by using insecticides.

There are no evidence of any pests, though. So far I have yet to see the remains of termites or roaches anywhere after using the insecticide. 🙁 And yet the destruction continues.

This is really upsetting and very annoying. Not sure what to do to stop those unseen enemies from destroying my things and my furnitures. Should I call pest control when I don’t even know where those pests are? I heard pest control can be quite costly. Would they be able to trace those rotten pests for me? I wouldn’t want to waste unnecessary time and money by calling pest control. And besides, I have a young child and a precious pet at home, so I am not really sure if I’m comfortable using excessive chemical that could actually bring them harm at home if not monitored properly. 🙁

Any suggestion on what should I do? Any natural remedies you guys can share with me? 🙁 I’m really sick and tired of using those sprays and having to mop and clean up those things with dettol and stuff because I’m afraid that my boy and my cat will get poisoned by the residues.

Cleffairy: Expensive lesson learned. As soon as you identify any pests, just kill them. One should never have any mercy towards pests. They are destructive and you should always get rid of them at first glance or they will breed trouble for you and your entire household.

Getting Intimate With Your Pelvic Floor Muscle: Introducing Vibrance Kegel Device

image

So, okay. Most of you ladies guessed correctly on what device is this. You are right.
image
It’s Vibrance Kegel device. This device is used in a medically invasive way to help the user to excercise their pelvic floor muscle. It is not a device used for intimate purpose like one of my reader have guessed. 😀 This may sound politically correct, but this thing really looks like a vibrator, sounds like a vibrator, but not a vibrator. 😛

Since there are many who guessed correctly and many have given up the voucher and asked me to give to others who have guessed correctly, I’ll just give the voucher to the first commenter who got it right. The first commenter who got it right is Kopi. So, my dear friend Kopi, please email me your mailing address so that I can send the voucher along with a small token of appreciation from me.

Hmm, now that we have the giveaway part settled, please allow me to tell you how I managed to get my hands on the device.

Last week, I was invited for a media engagement session by Rougue Communications on the behalf of Bioinfinity, the company who produced this device.
image

I managed to arrive on time and the first thing that I did was head over to the registration counter.
image

And I was given one of these goodie bags.
image

Each attendees and the members of the media received a set of Vibrance Kegel Device worth Rm498.
image
Along with a tube of the device’s lubricant and cleanser.
image
I was really anxious to listen to the talk…or rather, an informal workshop for bloggers and the members of the media.
image

When I went into the conference room, there was nobody there yet, save a few, that is. Three invited speakers were already there, and I managed to chit chat with them for awhile before the talks actually started.
image

Anyway, the room started to fill up with bloggers and participants alike.
image

And after warming up to each other, we’re divided into groups for activity purposes. My group consists of 5 chirpy, cheeky bloggers. We were told to name our group and we named it ‘The Shakers’ before we proceed to listen to the talk about getting ‘intimate’ with your pelvic floor muscle begins.

The talk by physiotherapist Ms. Suhaila from UKMMC mainly emphasizes pretty much on the importance on how important it is for a woman to take very good care of her pelvic muscle. You see, the daily events in a woman’s life can weaken pelvic floor muscle. Pelvic floor mucle is usually weakened because:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Menapause
  • Chronic cough
  • Genetic disorder

During the talk, us ladies are encouraged to perform the Kegel exercise regularly in order to maintain healthy pelvic floor muscle. Kegel exercise (named after Dr. Arnold Kegel), consists of repeatedly contracting and relaxing the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor. We are encouraged to perform it regularly to strengthened the pelvic floor muscle because weak pelvic floor muscle can cause:

  • Involuntary loss of urine during physical acitivities, such as coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising.
  • Sudden urge or need to urinate due to bladder spasms or contractions.
  • Difficulties in achieving orgasms during sexual intercourse.

We were told that there’s loads of benefit that you can reap if you perform Kegel exercise regularly and correctly. Among them are:

  • Strengthening of pelvic floor muscle.
  • Increase of blood flow and nerve supply to the pelvic region
  • Restroration of vaginal muscle tone and improve vaginal health
  • Increase thickness to the vaginal wall and lubrication after menapause
  • Prevention and treatment for urinary stres incontinence
  • Helps new mothers to recover from physical stress of childbirth
  • Improve sexual response and function.

It is stressed that having strong pelvic floor muscle is very important for women. It not only ensures a woman can safely carry a baby during pregnancy, but it also ensures smooth and safe vaginal delivery.

Having strong pelvic muscle will also help women in their menapausal age as well as it will help avoid incontinence, organ prolapse and sexual dysfunction. Urinary incontinence is basically involuntary loss of urine. Which means, you are unable to control your urge to pee and you ends up wetting yourself. Studies shown that this happens in every one of three mothers and it terribly impact a woman’s life. Many ended up having low self esteem because of this.

It is also highlighted that with strong pelvic floor muscle, sexual health will also improved. Women with strong pelvic floor muscle will find that sexual intercourse with their partner is much more enjoyable. Women who perform Kegel exercises regularly will find that sexual satisfaction is easier to achieve. This is because pelvic floor muscle are actually the muscle that’s surrounding the vagina opening and contract rhtyhamically during orgasms. In other words, having stronger pelvic floor muscle translate to better control over orgasm and the possibility of multiple orgasms is higher.

Interesting, isn’t it? Well, it gets more and more interesting. After about 1 hour of talk and  on the importance of taking good care of your perlvic floor muscle and the importance of Kegel exercise by both physiotheraphist  and the user of Vibrance Kegel Device, we were ushered to the gym and were shown how to perform Kegel exercise correctly

image

Bloggers trying to to do the exercise right. 😀 But it’s not an easy feat, I tell you. i was practically struggling to do it right.

image

One of the many positions of Kegel exercise- sitting position

image

Umm… I forgot what position is this, but it’s one of the challenging ones apart from trying to squeeze the pelvic floor muscle in the squatting position.

image

The physiotherapist assisting one of the participants during the Kegel exercise demonstration.

Tsk… by the time we’re done with demonstration session, I got all breathless and got all the wrong muscle stretch! 🙁 I couldn’t get it right, I think, cuz I feel my body aching all over. My hand, my legs, my arms. Oh, my God! I cannot imagine performing Kegel exercide on my own without help.

Thank God there’s the device for me to use instead! The Vibrance Kegel Device is an innovative, state of the art device, and is the most effective device to support Kegel exercise. You see, not all women is able to gauge the correct muscle. Most are like me, ending up exercising other muscle instead of the pelvic muscle.

I was informed that by using the device, I’ll be able to experience gentle vibration biofeedback that produces a positive stimulation to all the corrrect muscle if I were to insert the device correctly into my ahem… body. I was told that through continuos usage of this device, I’ll be able to strengthened my pelvic floor muscle. This device is invasive in nature, though. Those who are not sexually active, still a virgin or pregnant are not encouraged to use this device unless their doctor stated otherwise.

Hmm…whether or not it’s effective… I can’t really say. Not yet, at least. I’ll tell you guys one month later whether or not this device if effective or not-after I use it regularly to help me do Kegel exercise. 😀 I can’t possibly review it without using it now, can I? Let me use it and experiment with it first and I’ll tell you how it works and whether or not it benefits me. I’ll tell you in details. I promise. 😀

Anyway, it’s been a wonderful experience to be able to attend this talk/informal workshop. It’s been a wonderful journey of self education and awareness. I had so much fun. Do stay tune for my testimonial on the Vibrance Kegel Device. 😀

Cleffairy: *sigh* And as an answer to my husband’s curious question: No, Sweetheart, it’s not a vibrator. And no… the company doesn’t produce sex toys. You got to buy them somewhere else, I’m afraid. LOL!

Gentle birthing

Two weeks ago, I went to Central Market to meet my author friend, Zara. It was really a pleasure to finally meet her after knowing her all these years. When we just got to know each other, she was still a student and I have yet to publish my novels in the U.S.

It’s really nice to meet someone who is at the same wavelength with you. We talked about our writings and stuff, and for once, I don’t feel as if I am weird afterall.

We parted ways for after awhile and my husband and I were left to our own device in Annexe Gallery, Central Market. There are many interesting activities going on in the gallery. There were crafts and artworks on sale and loads of talks you can attend.

Initially I wanted to join the global green awareness talk, but something else caught my eyes.

image

It’s ‘gentle birth talk’ by gentle birth support group activists.
My husband was flustered that I chose to stay and listen to all the horror of gory of childbirth, but he accompanied me nevertheless and we learned quite a few things about childbirth.

image

This group obviously encourages natural birth.
image

My husband and I stayed for awhile and listened to their talks, and were were shown alot of things.
image

Among them is natural cervical dialation stage by stage.

And then we were shown this video of a woman, completely naked, giving birth in a pool of warm water assisted by only her husband. I was really shocked to see that. I mean, I may write erotic scene in my novels, but never in my life I thought I would see something so sensual with a bunch of people in public. Trust me, the vid of the woman giving birth assisted by only her husband was really sensual. She moaned and groaned as she breathe through her contraction and her sigh of relief when the baby was finally born. I know my husband was practically blushing, but I am not ashamed to admit that giving birth in the water is really fascinating.

Fascinating enough for me to do the same? Yes, I might consider. After all, I have always been fond of water. It is thereupeutic and soothing. And it is medically proven that a water birth gives less stress to both mother and baby in comparison to a normal vaginal birth. I know some hospitals provided this alternative to parents who wants it too, so why not? It’s drug free and less stress to mum and baby.

And the fact that there are no episiotomy and terrible stitches are involved in the whole process made it more tempting than a hospital birth. I’ve been there, and I hated that the most when I gave birth to my son. Damn the doc, the episiotomy was actually more painful than the actual childbirth itself, and I swear that the anaesthetic did not work for one bit!

Anyway, many interested couples who were intrigue by gentle birth were there too.
image

It was a really wonderful and eye opening experience, and I was really glad that my husband accompanied me to this talk despite the fact that he is a rather squeamish person. I really appreciate that.

Cleffairy: I am very proud of my husband. He is man enough to see all these. Men, are you man enough to see all these childbirth related things?

Checking it twice

Remember I blogged about my period going MIA not long ago? I got a negative result on both pregnancy tester provided in the home pregnancy test kit.

But I wasn’t convinced with the result and I thought I was pregnant as I had pregnancy symptoms. For peace of mind, I decided to go to the doctor to confirm it with me. It’s a good thing that I decided to check it twice, because if a woman is not pregnant and she’s not in menopausal phase of her life, any irregularities in her menstrual cycle can be dangerous. They usually mean hormonal imbalance, ectopic pregnancy or fibroids, which is deadly for a woman.

I may sound paranoid to most, but there’s no harm in checking things twice as sometimes, it saves lives.

I implement the ‘checking it twice’ habit in various expects of my lives, including when it comes to choosing growing up milk for my boy. You see, most growing up milk powder contains excessive added sugar, which is absolutely not good for growing up children.

Take a look at the video above. It’s similar to the one that I saw in Hospital Danau Kota’s waiting room (refer to my previous post HERE: https://cleff.bia.garf.us/?p=6439).

According to the video interview above with Professor Peter Davies (a member of Key opinion Leaders), it is recommended by The World Health Organization (WHO)  that we should keep added sugar intakes to less than 10 per cent of our total calorie intake.

It is reasonable recommendation, I must say as young children, particularly those ageing 2 to 3 years old and above only needs about 150 kcal or less than 7 teaspoons per day maximum.

Yes, children do not actually need much sugar in their diet while they are growing up. Whoever claims that children needs alot of sweets and sugar in their diet is a big liar. It’s definitely a myth that children needs alot of sugar in their daily diet.

But then again, feeding them excessive sugar can sometimes be unavoidable, as most growing up powder in the market contains a lot of added sugar. 🙁 Trust me. I know so because I’ve tried many growing up milk samples that’s given to me, and most of them taste rather sweet. Artificially sweet, I must say. I’m not lying. If you don’t believe me, you can try taste your children’s growing up milk like me too. Try it, and I daresay that most of them taste very sweet, and it is important to note that growing up milk are not supposed to taste sweet. Ask any paediatrician and they will tell you the same thing: growing up milk are not supposed to taste too sweet like chocolate milk or honeyed milk.

I am very particular when it comes to choosing growing up milk for my son as he’s an ADHD child, so it’s really tricky for me to choose a growing up milk that does not contain any added sugars. I can’t afford my son getting sugar rush as he’ll get hyper and rather uncontrollable, which is very dangerous as he’ll jump up and down, even when I told him not to do so. Once his sugar level is higher than it’s supposed to be, his concentration will go AWOL too.

I’ve been called many names. Cruel and controlling mother tops the list. Why? Because people have this perception that children should be given sweet things, and I happen to be strict in that department, especially growing up milk.

I know alot of modern parents are placed in an awkward predicament like me where sometimes the in laws interfere with parenting and says something like “Why don’t you allow your kids take milk with added sugars or Milo in it? It taste much nicer and they’ll definitely finish the whole glass faster”. Good God, as if added sugars in most growing up milk is not bad enough! Such statement is really horrifying.

Some growing up milk already had added sugars in in it if we’re not careful, we could be feeding our children sugar more than they needed. Parents should be firm when it comes to providing growing up milk to their children. Choose those with no added sugars in it, and remember to be firm with your stand as excessive added sugars will do more harm than good to your children’s body.

It is important for parents to read labels on children’s food products. When buying growing up milk, it’s important to look for the presence of these added sugars and not just look at the expiry date.

If an added sugar name appears near the top of the ingredient list, or there are more than one name present, then it’s a good indication that the food has high contents of added sugars.

If you’re a smart mummy and daddy and wants the best for your children, you should opt for foods and beverages labelled “no added sugars” or “less sugars” or “sugar free” on the packaging.

But be really careful, though, as sometimes sugar contents could still be there  in these children food products. Take this for an example: a product claiming “no added sucrose” or “sucrose free” could still contain other types of added sugars. If you see  ‘”no sucrose” but the label says that the products contains corn syrup solids or glucose syrup solids, then the product in question still contains added sugars.

So again, I’d like to say, be extra, extra careful. It can be rather tricky, I know, but I assure you that it’s worth spending our time checking the label twice or more before buying any food products for our children in the long run as it concerns their health in general.

It is important to  use a no added sugar products, especially no added sugar growing up milk. Growing up milk powder are supposed to be all about good nutrition for growing children, not added sugars that could increase the risk of various medical problems like obesity and diabetes(and extreme hyperactivity in ADHD children’s case)

I also saw something interesting in the Star newspaper a few weeks back. It was an advert from the Ministry of Health about their sugar reduction campaign they started last year… you know the one… telling us we should all eat a little less sugar. Anyway, it mentioned that added sugars can have many different names, such as corn syrup solids, sucrose and glucose syrup solids. And also that we need to be aware of claims made on packaging about specific types of sugar s of added sugars in these products such as products claiming “no added sucrose” or “sucrose free”; it could still contain other types of added sugars.

These two things got me thinking… since the Ministry of Health already said that corn syrup solids, sucrose and glucose syrup solids are added sugars, it is still quite amazing (not in a good way) how some children’s milk such as Mamil and Enfa can still included so much of these added sugars in their formulations. Why? Are they trying to make hyperactive children like my boy even more hyper, not to mention it is unhealthy for children to partake so much added sugars? Since the MOH also said that “no sucrose” doesn’t mean there isn’t any “added sugars”, I think it is even more important to read the ingredient label even more closely to check if there are other types of added sugars. I noticed Mamil Gold has a “no sucrose” claim on their packaging. I guess it is time for me to go check the ingredient label out although I think Anmum Essential is still best suited for my child as it contains no added sugars.

So, mummies and daddies out there, what growing up milk did you give your children? Is the content beneficial to your children? Does it contain any added sugars in it? Do check the label and let me know if your kids’ growing up milk contains any added sugars in it or not.

I’d be pleased if you share what growing up milk you feed your children with, and your opinions in regards to choosing growing up milk for your children. To me, what matters most is that I nurture my child with something that doesn’t do harm to his body in the long run. How about you? What’s important for you when you choose growing up milk powder for your children?

Anyway, as far as I’m concern, Anmum Essential is the only growing up milk powder with no added sugars in the market so far, and I intend to continue using that for my boy, considering that he’s okay with the milk and all that too.

Cleffairy: Remember, folks, it is important to make an informed decision when we buy growing up milk for our children. Sweetness comes in many forms, but it shouldn’t come in the form of growing up milk powder.

Help needed…

There’s a lot of bad news lately, and the most recent is that my husband’s friend’s son (a member of one of the It community in Malaysia) is admitted into the hospital for Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). It’s some sort of blood cancer.

This boy’s name is Faris. He’s 6 years old, and as of writing, he’s battling for his life in Sime Darby Medical Center Subang Jaya (Subang Jaya Medical Center).

As of writing this entry, the poor child is battling for his life in Sime Darby Medical Center Subang Jaya (Subang Jaya Medical Center). Initially the parents of this child wanted to transfer this child to government’s hospital to reduce cost, but the doctors adviced them against is as he’s critically ill and unstable.

Faris and his family desperately need your help. The medical bills are escalating, and right at the moment, we’re trying all we can to raise Rm30,000 for Faris and his family.

And if you wish to help this poor child, you may donate any amount of money into this Maybank account:

My eating habit

image

I’m a believer of a hearty breakfast. It’s one meal that nobody should miss… cuz to me, it’s the thing that fuel you up for the rest of the day. I know some don’t like to take breakfast cuz they have no appetite in the morning and would opt for a hearty lunch or dinner instead, but I don’t do that. I believe not taking breakfast is unhealthy cuz you’ll eat more during the later time of the day and you’ll get fat easily cuz your body won’t be using much energy to digest it during those working hours where you sit in front of the PC to do work and whatnot.

I usually spoil myself for breakfast. My breakfast is always heavy… just like the picture above and more often than not, it always enable me to last til teatime at about 3pm-4pm. I often skip lunch. It’s not important to me. Almost never hungry at lunchtime while dinner is always a family affair. I always make sure we have a sit down dinner at home so that we can talk about our day.

So…I take heavy breakfast, skip lunch, have snacks or sandwiches during teatime and have a sit down dinner. How about you? What’s your eating habit? Do you take breakfast? Or do you prefer to skip it and take lunch instead?

Cleffairy: People always ask me how I stay thin despite of the things that I stuffed into my face. I guess apart from a great metabolism that helps my body to burn the food real fast, having breakfast every day plays a really important role in keeping myself petite.

No compromise

Clashes of opinion is inevitable when it comes to parenting. Parents always wants the best for their children during those crucial growing up years. I find always doing the best for my son is hard, sometimes.

There’s always interference from outsiders and relatives who are often judgemental on my parenting skills and my opinions regarding children’s diets.

You see…a lot of relatives questioned me on why I don’t encourage my son to take a lot of sweet food and why I throw a fit whenever I saw meddling relatives adding sugars/sweeteners or Milo in to my son’s milk before feeding it to him.

I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again. I want the best for my son and I refuse to tolerate added sugars in his growing up milk. It can be harmful to his body. It not only increases the risk of many health-related issues like obesity, diabetes and dental cavities, but it also triggers hyperactivity and lack of attention in him.

Some people may think that children need a lot of sugar during their growing up years, but I know for sure that it’s not true and just a myth. Too much will do more harm than good to children’s bodies.

Currently, I’m using Anmum Essential for my son. It contains absolutely no added sugars. It’s the only growing up milk powder in the market that contains no added sugars. And because its got the advanced nutrients found in other brands, I don’t feel like I am making a compromise anywhere – it’s the best of both worlds

Parents who have the same problems as me should also take a firm stand. Don’t let meddling in laws, babysitters or relatives undermine your children’s health by allowing them to feed your children excessive added sugars or talk you into buying growing up milks that claim to be superior and specially formulated for growing up children and yet still contain such high levels of added sugars.

I know as parents, we have a lot of woes as people can be judgemental towards our decisions whenever it comes to parenting. But be firm. It’s for our own children’s good. If you’re worried and feel uneasy on what you’re doing and wish to share your experience with other parents like yourself, you can get connected to Mum Knows Best Facebook page.

Mum knows best is a forum for parents such as yourselves. Mummies and daddies alike, you can share your parenting woes, your concerns and parenting tips and tricks with other members. It is real mums talking and sharing with real mums. Its great – do check it out.

I have no doubt that you will benefit from it greatly. You not only can share and exchange your views on parenting and providing the best nutrition for your children during their growing up years, but you also can learn more from each other through it.

Sex Toys – Enhance Your Relationship With These Bedroom Toys

Are sex toys the secret ways for a more exciting sexual relationship with your partner? Maybe they are and maybe they couldn’t be. That will depend on your perception as an individual looking for ways to enhance your sexual drives and pleasures. Many would claim that introducing these toys into their bedroom is somewhat difficult, but there are also many people out there who say that these toys are great stuffs that spice up their sexual fantasies. With these toys only used in the bedroom, sex partners have had the best time of their lives experimenting and enjoying sex together.

The mere fact is many people from all over the world talk about using sex toys. They are normal sex gadgets that are talked about without malice particularly to those people who are open-minded. These toys for are for private and bedroom use only and they are pleasurable especially when they are introduced to your partner in an open and honest manner. Vibrators and others may sound titillating and could offend others but if you know how to introduce them properly to your partner, this can greatly result into an amazing sexual experience between the two of you.

Introducing sexual toys to your partner is definitely a sensitive matter most especially when you two are used to making love the standard and traditional way. In all honesty, tell to your partner the kind of sexual pleasure you want to achieve. Tell him/her that the use of sexual toys is an open thing these days and there is no reason to get offended. In addition, discuss the types of sex toys that you like and that the two of you will enjoy and feel comfortable using it together. By doing these intimate procedures, you will be on your way to use the kind of toy you want for your next intercourse.

The moment you have already made things clear and that the two of you are already comfortable and amenable with the arrangement, the next step you should do is to shop for the sex toys you want to use. This part is definitely fun and exciting as you will get the opportunity to see different types of toys. Most probably, you will end up adding what’s already on your list. If time allows, make it a point to do the shopping together so both of you can decide amenably on a particular kind of sex toy you want to buy.

Along with the toys, there are also other types of sex enhancers like lubricants, creams, and massage oils. There are also edible lotions, gels, and lubricants that can be purchased and you will surely thank yourself for buying them after the first time you used them together. It will be more likely that you will have a stock or a collection of these items to further enhance your sexual intimacy and experience with your partner.

As long as there is an open communication, sex toys really play an important role in strengthening relationships among couples these days.
